After Capcom and Sony fell out, with the former taking Monster Hunter over to Nintendo platforms, a lot of people in Japan were a bit annoyed. Omega Force subsequently said "Well, if Capcom aren't gonna make hunting games for Sony platforms anymore, we are", so they popped out a clone with a Japanese mythology overlay called Toukiden. It wasn't very good.

General consensus on SS/SSD is that everything about it except the actual game is sensational.

Really, as a game, it's a pretty so-so 6.5-7/10. In terms of storytelling, setting, art-direction and so on, it's an easy 9/10 at least. A sequel that scrapped the whole MonHun wannabe thing and took it in a more straightforward ARPG direction would be potentially incredible.

Inafune and the Japan Studio guys had some ideas worked out for a sequel, but apparently it just stalled and neither party really considered it as matter of high-priority, so it was shelved. Dunno if it'll ever actually end up coming to fruition or not, but probably not when you take into account how Sony treats a lot of their IPs.
