What are they even gonna host there, Hearthstone tournaments? Do people in LA even care about esports? Ain't no one gonna fly there just to watch fucking video games.

They will. They're pushing that overwatch league shit super hard, the multi-million dollar registration fee for it makes sense with this abomination being officially unveiled. I figured it was just code for their KR arena getting an update.

also, yeah, starcraft. They're getting ready to unveil a new one, no doubt. Plus hots is getting a lot of media push, and the new WoW expack... It's a good time to unveil it. If only temporarily to get big numbers coming in, they could probably coast on that alone.

oh and don't forget destiny 2. It's foregone the MLG this go round, this fits perfectly within that agenda. May even see CoD making an exodus and properly murdering the corpse of MLG, renting it out to esl, and other companies.

Then again, it is the blizzard arena, maybe they won't make the smart move like nexon and they'll keep it all locked up to only their titles. suicidal in the west but who knows.

Maybe they'll have those novelty cocktails. There was a good horde themed one back at the wotlk launch party at blizz hq.
>>
All of their "esports" titles are fucking shit, unless they gonna announce new ones at blizzcon I can't see them being big.

>They're getting ready to unveil a new one, no doubt.
There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever of a new Starcraft being planned, whether it'd mean the fourth iteration of SC2 or an entirely new installment. SC2 post-WoL was a flop and a moneysink and with the Broodwar cashgrab being brand new I don't expect a new RTS from Blizzard within the next 15 years.
>>
>>389630412
I didn't mean necessarily a "new starcraft" as in new story or continuation or whatever. I mean an SC2 compilation pack with another/final balance patch is a feasible possibility judging by the success of the remaster.
>>
>>389629946
Doesn't neighboring orange county already have an esports arena?
>>
>>389630521
OC is less of a prime spot. If you think they won't host big ass fuckoff parties for E3 every year here since it's in such close proximity to staples center, you're a fool.
>>
>>389630502
There will never be a 'final' balance patch for SC2, only a 'last' patch before Blizzard gives up on the game. They never had a coherent plan or design for the multiplayer, it should be evident from the last-minute changes to HoTS and LoTV.
>>
>>389630578
I'd rather build it in another state or somewhere that does not have any such venue, to bring esports to more people. Rather than building one 30 miles from another

That's not financially viable though. It would cost tens of millions of dollars (if not hundreds considering the tech involved) and in some bumfuck nowhere state or city, it would offer nothing to the local denizens with a low population density who are more than likely not esports watchers to begin with.

They could bring it to vegas sure, but are you gonna throw a fucking bar and betting on matches? That's a total clusterfuck, having worked on the legal end of a casino trying to compete with others in vegas it is a total fucking disaster. A new competitor in the space would be strong armed, bought out, and thrown in the garbage can by the luxor.

There's really nowhere to put it BUT LA.
Close proximity and lots of inbound traffic from east asia which is 99% of the esports audience to begin with, high population density with a bustling esports scene in regards to both the FGC and other games (literally every worthwhile esports game dev is hq'd in cali, excluding aforementioned fgc devs, and a lot of them still are).

It just makes sense.

i guess they got tired of renting the anaheim convention center

So which esports make money? League of legends and what else?
>>
>>389631250
dota, csgo
>>
>>389631250
league, cs:go in europe, dota 1 (jury's out on dota 2, but going by international numbers I would hazard a guess in saying it does), WoW arenas, hearthstone, heroes of the storm is bordering profitability as of late. overwatch (duh). CoD, battlefield, madden and the whole ea sports suite really.

They're all super profitable and watched by thousands at the very least.

>dota 1
>WoW arenas
>hots
>OW
>CoD
>Battlefield
>Madden & Co.
none of those are profitable
>>
>>389631938
They are though. overwatch has made around two hundred million since the start of the year, entirely from registration fees for the new league. WoW arenas are some of the most heavily publicized MMO pvp garbage out there.
and if you think the MLG isn't profitable from madden, cod, and battlefield, I don't know what to tell you. EA makes nearly a billion dollars annually from just the ultimate team shit in their games.
>>
>>389630205
overfail needs several more years of development, with a brand new dev team, from a different company, in a different nation, before it's ready to go even semi-professional. they're pushing a buggy, unbalanced, and boring game to become a major eSport when it was designed from the ground up to be baby's first FPS.
>>
>>389632131
doesn't matter if it's a shit game if people will watch it. people watch aeon of strife knockoffs all the time.
>>
>>389632236
I wish people had any kind of taste or personal opinion tbqhwy
>>
>>389632236

how the hell would people enjoy watching overwatch though. people will watch their fabortire player, but team watching seems fucked up
