Depends on the level design. I just played that shadowrun remake and it was a piece of shit. The levels were linear and the demons would just spawn horde instead of being intricately placed like the old fps game. It honestly felt exactly like duke nukem forever.

Its definitely a step in the right direction. I do agree that the maps are mediocre with some downright bad sections. The shooting is solid though, but the game is way too easy and lacking enemy numbers. The scarecrow enemies are also poorly balanced. Too tanky and significantly harder to dodge than anything else. They are an absolute nightmare on the one hit kill difficulty. Also putting the weak human enemies at the end was a mistake, theyre far more fun to fight than the cultist mages.

Other way around, Quake maps are abstract nonsense which is why they can get creative with the layout in a way that realistic levels can't. Maps generally became more sparse and uninteresting once fps started trying to mimic real life environments and DUSK fell for that meme too.

Completely different games. Devil Daggers is a first person shooter version of Robotron without the RNG. It's one single arena you play to get a high score. It's good for what it is, but I can't see anyone who isn't a fan of arcade games caring about it.

quake is alright but I wouldn't say every map is a 10/10 and it was always less to do with the actual map and more how you navigate through it. Also Dusk is obviously taking inspiration from redneck rampage which did have that flat open design, the real problem with dusk's levels is when it's indoors or underground and very restrictive, theyve gotta find a good balance and scale to the rooms.
imo Descent 2 is the pinnacle of 3D level design

Only weapon I really had an issue with was the crossbow since it's so easy to abuse. A weapon that can shoot through walls probably isn't the best idea, especially since you can use it to cheat against the E1 boss.

These shovelware games should be given for free but then again these only exist only to be quick nostalgia cashgrabs and nothing else. They are the opposite of what old shooters did which is push technology and manage to have great level design and well made architecture on very limited tech.

We had much better passion projects back then and even much better free mods for unreal and quake for free back then, projects which had even more quality sometimes than even the vanilla content, only clueless people are the retards who never found projects like these and rather waste money on cheaply made garbage becase it´s looks like minecraft, since i don't remember quake looking like a mappers first attemp.

I hope youre not implying that making some doom or quake maps is comparable to making your own game from scratch even if it uses a babby friendly engine like Unity. Mods also arent a replacement for new games. Yes there have been better passion project but thats irrelevant to the point. Sometimes people like to explore the roots of classic games. What do you think map projects like the Doom the Way id Did are about and why do you think they go with the vanilla engine instead of something like Gzdoom or Eternity? The idea is to focus more on achieving the aesthetics of the original games while also focusing on the overall designs of the original levels in terms of gameplay and structure and trying to recreate that.

Yeah it doesn't look like much until you look into the actual production behind it i.e. the way the guy who made it used the same methods commonly used for creating sprites back in the day, i.e. creating clay models, posing them, taking pictures, and editing the photos into sprites that conformed to the game's palette.

I really enjoyed it, it's at it's best when there is a dense but open level with plenty of enemies, like the later one with the petrol station.
The worst was the secret level which was just an underground tunnel thing with no room to jump around.
All in all for someone that loves doom more than quake, I wish it was a little more like doom but it's first episode was like a 7.5/10. I have a feeling things will pick up with better abstract design and enemy placement later on
