You can have antagonistic characters that are good, but they require more work to be decent. It isn't like Awakening has good characters to start with, but Tharja doesn't really stand out as a well designed character from even those.

Usually the character people cite for the trope is Morrigan from DA:O. And Morrigan is a dumb cunt.
