Play and take your own conclusion you cuck.
>>
it's still p good, but to understand why it's one of the "best of all time" (no such thing, games age) you had to be there in 1998. half-life changed the way they made shooter campaigns. basically, it got rid of lots of gamey shooter elements and made a shooter that was more "cinematic" and "realistic." e.g., the fact that you repaired your suit at health charger stations rather than picked up health packs was a big deal. it didn't have levels in the old sense, instead the world was continuous. the AI was impressive for the time. you might laugh at the idea that half-life is "realistic," but back then the fact that it started off with you arriving at *work* was itself a big deal.
>>
I liked it but some areas can be bullshit, like there's this one part where you gotta deal with a turret and another HECU enemy, and it's almost impossible to get passed them without grenade launcher, it made me almost consider turning on god mode for a little bit, also doesn't help that loading takes forever and sometimes it even crashes
>>
>>389591429

Really? That's was hard for you?

For me it was the monster in the propulsion chamber and the tanks in Surface Tension.
>>
It's a great game unlike HL2.
>>
>>389592340
It was during On a Rail, there's an area that turns and around the corner is the one HECU guy and a turret, the problem is that they shoot nonstop, even if the turret guy stops shooting the HECU guy keeps shooting and vice versa, I had to look around for some grenades before I could take care of them
>>
>>389592734

Oh the elevators. I just jump into the HECU soldier, kill him and go upstairs.
>>
>>389589071
Just completed it for the first time this afternoon. I liked it a lot and absolutely get why it was a big deal back then. Lots of detail in interactions at big and small scale plus variety of situations and fun level design that threw new challenges at you constantly.

This being said, shooting mechanics themselves are bullshit, even moreso for dealing with regular humans, which are bulletsponges for some reason. On top of it, shotgun and M16 are total ass and won't hit a damn thing.
>>
Absolutely

>>
>>389593119
Shotgun is really effective but you need to be at very close range, and use the right click instead of left. It one shots any enemies.
>>
>>389589338
Half-Life is a good game but this is just bad taste. It was known at the time for its physics and realistic environment, which was something that hadn't really been done before in an FPS(save for Trespasser but Trespasser was a piece of shit).
Other FPSes of the time, such as Unreal, Quake and Shadow Warrior all had better gameplay.
>>
>>389594247
Well yeah, shotgun I was able to use effectively once every now and then. M16 on the other hand was just the weapon i dried out first hosing enemies up close. It's baffling how bad it was.
>>
>>389594458
It's pretty shit but the grenade launcher makes up for it

It's pretty good, played it for the first time around a week ago. Made the mistake of playing on hard mode and with the HD models on, but it was still a good time. Enjoyed it more than HL2, which I replayed after HL1.

Don't know if I even want to bother with the episodes. I played through a bit of EP1 and I'm already super bored of the OP gravity gun and Alyx is really annoying.
>>
>>389594830
We're all entitled to our opinions, anon, even if they're wrong.
It was better than Quake II, which came out a year closer to Half-Life, but not the original.
>>
>>389591373
Yeah, to be frank, while I was awed by the cinematic style when I first played it, the gameplay is pretty terrible. Lousy controls (jumping puzzles argh), and the combat is unsatisfying.

Nigga EP2 is God-tier.

>>
>>389594965
Episode 1 is kinda mediocre, but Episode 2 is better than the entirety of HL2's core campaign.

>>389595142
Episode 2 is overrated IMO. It may have had more content on the whole, but that doesn't mean it was good content. Take the Antlion Caves for example, that was almost half the game and it was just shit. Episode 1 was more consistent in its quality. The pitch black tunnels were a brilliant segment, and none of the rest of the game sticks out as bad.
I will admit that Episode 2 had by far the best finale of any game in the series.
>>
Don't play it in Hard. Enemies become bullet sponges and it's not challenging just annoying.
>>
>>389595213
I'm playing Opposing Force right now and I'm pretty sick of these obtuse as fuck levels and locked rooms with exit points found through inconsistent environemental interaction as well as the overreliance on NPCs with some of the worth pathing AI ever written as well as some of the worst physics interaction in games

it's neat and has great weapons but I can't fucking stand the praise it gets as the best entry in the series
>>
>>389595691
>Take the Antlion Caves for example, that was almost half the game and it was just shit. Episode 1 was more consistent in its quality
this is completely true. Episode 1 is really underrated
>>
>>389596003
cool pasta good point though

Opposing Force's multiplayer made up for it IMO, wonder if anyone's still playing
>>
>>389589386
No joke, is emulating strange ps2 ports like HL2 and Deus Ex worth checking out? or are they objectively worse?
>>
>>389596051
yes I pasta'd it but only because it's my post and I didn't feel like rewording stuff I felt I wrote extremely well just yesterday
>>
Episode 2>HL1>HL2>Opposing Force>Blue Shift>Episode 1
>>
>>389596039
I wouldn't say it's underrated. It's just a map pack, like Blue Shift. Something like that can't really excel.
Episode 2 is better, mainly because of the finale, but not *that* much better.

>>389596121
Half Life 2 had the Decay expansion, but that got an unofficial PC port IIRC. Not sure what else there is to say about that version of the game. Runs better than the DC port at least.
Deus Ex for PS2 is objectively worse but still a very interesting port. Nearly all the content is still there including all the routes in levels, optional areas, side quests, weapons, ammo types, mods, dialogue choices etc. etc. But it's wonky as fuck, looks like crap and needs to load constantly.
>>
>>389596332

>forgetting Decay

Which btw was pretty decent.
>>
>>389589071
It's better than the sequel
>>
>>389589071
>>389595697
This, really. Half-Life is a good game but hard mode crops up issues like >>389589441.

>>389592734
If you crouch behind the cart console before it rounds the corner the trooper won't see you or start shooting. You can ride it all the way past him or up to him and get a surprise attack in.
>>
>>389595551
Adrian is the fucking terminator compared to every other HECU soldier, also Gordon is wearing a super suit so he couldn't do anything to him.
>>
still has crisp fucking movement
weapons are still fun to use
doesn't really have any "aged systems" or bad old interface or anything, since it's a pretty pure FPS, with some platforming - but its ok because >still has crisp fucking movement
still perfectly playable with the standard retail build
but really fun with mods/TCs too

i don't think its aged really, graphics might be a bit blocky but it looks better than Strafe and shit which are new.
>>
>>389596645

I don't think Shephard was any kind of "super soldier" like Freeman and Barney were. I mean, Barney alone went to fucking Xen without any special suit or anything.
>>
>>389589507
>>389589410
>misspells xen the same way
hmmmmm
>>
>>389589071
Yes
The only bad weapon is the assault rifle if you try to use it as anything but a grenade launcher
>>
>>389596751
Shephard doesn't even need a HEV suit to run sanic speed while holding like 15 weapons.
>>
>>389596332
Opposing Force is the best Half-Life game.
>>
>>389597008

He did have a HEV variant tho.

http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Powered_Combat_Vest
>>
HL has some of the best gameplay feels in FPS games ever. New games should take some lessons from it
>>
>>389595213
it gets really fucking boring after the lambda complex

you know they just ran out of ideas when they arbitrarily teleport you somewhere else
>>
>>389597226
That's pretty much just for protection and HUD tho
>>
>>389596420
i have to wonder what happened to the MILF team

did they just perish in the nuclear explosion
>>
>>389596751
Considering how Shepard survived regular Black Ops attacks and fought the Race X and survived I guess he must be pretty badass. Definitely more badass than Barney; he didn't even have a final boss.
>>
>tfw new games will never have bhopping and movement that feels really good because they are too focused on MUH REALISTIC ANIMATIONS
>>
It almost falls into "bad" territory.
Movement is awful, platforming is therefore unpleasant and there is lots of it.
There are like 3 really well designed levels in the game. Gameplay is too slow, the most effective way of dealing with enemies is shooting their foot while they just stand there.
>>
>>389597597
this fight was a good addition

and i love the scientist's complete utter disbelief at what happened
>>
>>389597576
yea I wish games had more movement like Fallout 3, bioshock and overwatch.
Those games have the best movement.
>>
>>389597340
Idk man it literally runs on batteries and uses HEV charging stations.
>>
>>389597364

On OpFor you can find Gina's body at Xen. But she's using Green's suit at it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qqakvhwMTE
>>
>>389597434

Dude, he went to a alien dimension filled with radiation, swimmed in alien waters and fought the aliens while at it.

That's badass as fuck.
>>
>>389598068
Not taking that away from him. Although I don't remember radiation ever showing up in Xen.
I'm just saying that Adrian had to deal with with worse shit.
>>
>>389598150

People went there with HEV suits. So i guess some kind of radiation was present. You don't jump in an alien lake expecting to not grow a second dick.
>>
>>389598267
I'm sure the standard issue Black Mesa security guard armor and helmet can handle it.
>>
>>389589507
Why would you want to play Xen, anyway? As far as I'm concerned, Half Life that ends with "FREEMAN, YOU FOOL!" is fucking ideal.
>>
>>389589071
it was great for its time. that time is over.
>>
>>389598267
Well, the HEV suit comes with a radiation counter and during his stay Freeman's doesn't detect radiation even once. So I say we can rule that out. It's not like there is a lack of a ways to die in Xen. I'll actually consider Ross's theory for it and guess that a lot of those explorers fell to their deaths upon teleportation.
Although the majority was probably mauled to death by aliens.
>>
>>389598323

Glorious MTV and PAGST always save the soldiers life.

*salutes*
>>
>>389598420
It's still better than most new FPS games
>>
>>389589071
stop playing after Xen and watch it online.
>>
>>389598489

Giving the fact that the scientist went there with HEV and weapons mean that they were there for quite a while desu. It's not like there was several people in Xen at once when things happened.
>>
>not just using the door infinite health glitch and cruising through the rest of the game and basically skipping xen with invulnerability
>tfw I found that glitch on my own as a kid, didn't even learn about it from speedrunners cheesing
>>
It's just short of being a masterpiece, OP.

Don't buy in to the HL2 hype, that game is boring and has awful characters with corny dialogue forced on you throughout the whole game and it's episodes.
>>
>>389598649
I don't know about that; Freeman is an exception among his peers; even with guns I doubt those guys would have lasted for too long out there.

>>389598785
Freeman does have the advantage of being the only scientist at black mesa that isn't 45-65 years old.
>>
>>389598914
That's true, but his badassery extends beyond his age. I mean, look at all those dead security guards. Or the military; they were just grunts, and if Shepard is anything to go by they were probably between 20 and 30 years old.
>>
I like it

>>
I just started it for the first time today. Current thought is: hard is unfun since the enemies are bullet sponges. Should have picked medium.

>>
>>389589071
I played it for the first time ever last week, and I gotta say, I didn't expect it to be so fucking good. I assumed it was mostly nostalgia or just memeing because of the whole HL3 ordeal, but damn.

Loved how simple it was in its way, the fact that you're on your own and have a purpose still is amazing, I felt even freer than playing things like BoTW desu. You can do shit however you like, with whichever weapon you choose, maybe play normally or just bullshit your way through. No annoying cutscenes, overly talkative NPCs, hand holding, etc. You should seriously give it a try.
>>
>>389600403

I heard that Valve wasn't against using him again. If you ask me I say they should have turned him into a companion for Gordon (maybe add Barney as well to get the trifecta) or give him his own DLC. I also read an anon's idea of G-Man getting tired of Gordon and being unable to kill him for reasons, so he just sends Adrian to do it. That way Adrian would be a boss of sorts.

>>389605593
I honestly don't know why I like him so much; I guess I just sympathize with all the shit he had to go through.
As for G-Man's interest in Adrian, I once read a theory I liked that said that Adrian was G-Man's first candidate as an employee before he got involved with Gordon. That would explain why he got Adrian promoted into advanced training and saved his life.
However, I feel that G-Man wanted to avoid Race X terraformed the Earth. After all, that was the purpose of that giant alien Adrian killed at the end of Opposing Force.
Him being kept alive if out of sentimentality from G-Man's part, since he admits to seeing a bit of him in Shepard.

I dunno if this has been discovered before, but me and my buddy used some addons that gave us low gravity, and we found a fully playable survival level hidden in Swamp fever. You can't access it from the main menu, and yet it functions like every other survival map.

I remember playing a spinoff version that turned all the CS:S maps into singleplayer missions.

Surface Tension got a patch that not only restored the cut content but also added a couple of areas.

One of the (many) authors of SMOD in the last few years created a standalone SMOD launcher to compensate for the Steam pipeline crap. It's in moddb and compatible with many other SP mods. I found this baby trying to find a really elder version of SMOD, and all it took to make it work was extracting HL2 maps into it. One of the most satisfying, action packed, and challenging FPS ever.

Googling "Hidden survival level Swamp Fever Left 4 Dead 2" and looking at the Swamp Fever wikipage does not reveal anything. You just found a secret nobody else has. Congrats, man.

>>389607313
Hard on HL is no fun the same way easy is not fun. Just play on Normal.
>>
>>389607313
hard mode is a lot like the nightmare mode of older FPS games

it's literally normal mode with ultra fast monsters that have twice as much health
>>
>>389607668
I'm sure someone knows about it. Does Valve use twitter?
>>
>>389607857
they aren't any faster, and they dont respawn (which was what made doom nightmare impossible)
only thing that changes is damage taken and damage dealt
>>
>>389607939
No clue. Just post a thread on the Steam forums. They get tons of traffic.
>>
>>389606970
The didn't shorten it they remade it entirely and while what they made wasn't terrible it removed huge chunks of what made those levels fun.

Like On a Rail was a fantastic level and one of my favorites because you basically followed the track to different heavily guarded area's and set pieces. Well what they did instead is compress certain area's, halved the number of enemies, removed certain sections entirely and added a "puzzle" which is one of those "turn of/on the switch while the floor is lava" sort which Half-Life 2 did alot.

Then despite being technically amazing they for some reason decided to remove other subtle bits of details which considering the whole gimmick is for it to be Half-Life but with better graphics and details it just doesn't make any sense to me. They're minor things sure but for a remake all about little details they missed a few. Like they added a fire alarm in Office Space so if you use the flares it'd trigger the sprinkler system, but now for some reason stepping on cockroaches won't kill crush them and that popular bit of the squid alien will eat meat chunks you cut in the freezer is removed.

However if there is one reason to get the game it's that now damage is dealt depending on where you hit your enemy, which means that bullet sponge military that can take 3 shotgun blasts to the face are no longer a thing.
>>
>>389608034
monsters don't respawn in quake's nightmare mode either

they ARE faster, look at how fast marines can run and how they take almost no breaks between SMG shots

vortigaunts also take 0.5 seconds to charge on hard while they take 1 second on other difficulties

I don't know the complete core functioning of HL1 AI but I definitely recall shooting Marines square in the face with the assault rifle or shotgun and them just taking it like it was nothing. Maybe they just lowerd the health of the Marines or something in Black Mesa but it feels far less bullet spongey, so long you know how to hit your shots.

Bullet time.

>>389611286
I found that one too. I'm convinced that it's not an actual survival level because the level is really unpolished. There is random invisible walls everywhere, and the rollercoaster just despawns. I'm convinced that at one point, every level in Left 4 Dead 2 was made to support survival and that they kept just the good ones.

I can't even remember much of the final boss or how I beat it, besides that it looked like a turtle in the middle of a portal.

Intro and when you see Freeman jumping to Xen.

>>389613846

Just download Team Fortress Classic and it still fantastic desu.
>>
>where are we taking this Freeman guy
>topside for questioning
What did he mean by this? They've just been slaughtering hundreds of scientists that they could have been questioning. Also why worry about them finding the body? Wouldn't it be perfectly acceptable to say you won a life endangering shootout with him if you filled him full of holes? Why throw him in a trash compactor while still alive and conscious and not even stick around to watch it squish him?
>>
>>389613992
there's a cut mission in decay where the marines were planning to shoot gordon AND throw him the garbage compactor but you get there just in time to shoot the marines so they just drop gordon
>>

>Why are they questioning the guy who basically was part of the world's apocalypse

The higher the difficulty (SMOD skill level, ranges from Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard, Nightmare), different enemy placements, number of enemies, and enemy types (Combine soldiers with riot shields, metropolice with riot shields on their faces, new zombie types like zombies without headcrabs) 24+ weapons, gore system similar to F.E.A.R. You're really not entirely OP, on the higher difficulties you go down fast. SMOD mode makes the game nearly impossible and grinds the pace to a halt (the point where it's really not that fun except if you're a masochist). SMOD mode removes all medkits from supply crates and replaces them with coins and surprise headcrabs. The coins are for use at medical and armor stations. You can also gib enemies and eat their guts to gain back some health in both SMOD mode and default.

The intro to Opposing Force pretty much makes the entire game. I also like how Shephard actually never gets his orders to kill the scientists. The osprey gets downed before his commanding officer gives them so the whole game you are going through completely neutral which allows you can utilize "assets" in the same way as Freeman. This is probably a subtlety that a lot of people missed, especially since you know that the orders for the HECU grunts are to kill the scientists from playing HL1.

Remember when Gearbox wasn't shit?
>>
So because Gordon kills the Nihilanth, whoever G-Man works for gains control of Xen?
>>
>>389614898
>I also like how Shephard actually never gets his orders to kill the scientists.
That's interesting to think about.
