The magic system was fucked, the story was meh, but there are worse games in the series.

The worst thing about FFVIII though is the level scaling. Having a JRPG which encourages paficism is just crazy.

Same, except I also hate the music. Outside of Maybe I'm a Lion, Man with the Machine Gun and Under Her Control. Everything else is like water torture, because a single part of the song overpowers everything else becoming the entire song, so it just beeps at me incessantly whether the overpowering part is the main melody, counter melody or the bassline depending on the song. (Or whatever they're actually called, since I know almost nothing about music theory and terminology.)
