Thief 2 has no bad missions. Thief does.
>>
i like thief more than thief 2 because you're actually allowed to use your sword once in a while

>>389585276
Thief 2 is better in every way.

Yawn.
>>
THIEF 2 HURRRRR
TDP or TMA is just a matter of taste. I disliked the monster levels so TMA is perfect for me.
>>
>>389585276
I liked MA more. Felt more polished, while being basically a same game.
I liked playing Deadly shadows too, despite it being a clunky shitfest, but I found it quite comfy with cool atmosphere, so I just patched it up and gave it a pass

The Dark Project is pretty much 'THAT level: the game', Thief 2 is better in every way.
>>
I love Thief and Thief 2. Will I like Styx? I kind of want to get it but I always pass on it.
>>
>>389586614
I liked it a lot, it's not Thief but it's clearly inspired by it.
>>
>>389586556
I'll give you Thieves' Guild, but all those other levels are great and fun as fuck to ghost and go full loot on
>>
>>389587261
I think I'll just get it, it's cheap right now and I'm tired of debating myself on this, kind of pointless for how much it is.
>>
>>389587353
You think Escape! is fun? I think that's Thi4f tier to be honest, it might make sense in relation to the plot but it's no very fun as there's no thieving and the entire layout is needlessly convoluted and everything looks the same.

Yep. It was more detailed and there were actually more than 3 pieces of fucking furniture type in each level. Also more routes and hidden shit.

but that's the best part, I think it has great layout and love how it segue's into Constatine's mansion ground level

on no level is it Thi4f tier, all it does it may force you to use your blackjack/sword more than previous levels if granted. but it's perfectly fine to ghost it
>>

The gameplay is perfectly designed but there are some dogshit levels
Thief 2 wins because of more varied gameplay and more consistent level so consistent they copy pasted one level

Escape! is the only bad level that you posted.
>>
>>389587978
The best part is that it wastes your time? I don't think so, the best levels from Thief are Assassins and The Sword which are focused levels on thievery with non linear level design not meandering through caves with dinosaurs and zombies in them for an hour.

Are you really going to start another Thief thread with the tiresome debate of which one is better? Come with something new for a change.

Got a question about Dromed. I'm following Nicks tutorial. I tried to open Thief Objective Wizard (v1.02) and I got this. richt32.ocx should not be outdated. What do I do? I'd rather not use Goalmaster.

Escape was terrible. It's okay until Garret gets out of the basement, but as soon as he reaches the first floor of Constantine's mansion is't an absolute pain int he ass. He can't outrun the beast guards and dies i one hit. The area of completely bloated with enemies to effectively sneaking past them without save scumming is almost impossible. The a.i. is completely fucked too, Half of the time when I play the mission it glitches out and all the enemies get thrown into the alert phase and never come out of it. Not only are there beast guards everywhere but there are also those dumb exploding frogs that magically already know where Garret is. tl;dr escape is garbage.

I'm used to modern games but it's not a difficult game at all if you have a brain.
>>
>>389588012
In what way does Thief 2 have more varied gameplay than Thief 1?

The entirety of Thief 2 is sneaking, blackjacking and disabling robots. In Thief 2 you have a sword that you literally never get to use if you're playing on Expert difficulty, it may as well not even be in your inventory. Thief 1 breaks up the repetitiveness by keeping you on your toes with huge exploratory D&D thief dungeon crawls, a powerful atmosphere of dread and real resource management survival horror style gameplay woven throughout the campaign.

I've played through Thief Gold probably like 6x in total and Thief 2 only like 2x fully and then like 3 halfway attempts.

I'd argue that the levels are less consistent if anything. First City Bank, Precious Cargo and Life of the Party are all good of course, LotP so good in-fact that it spawned basically an entire subgenre of fanmissions with similar gameplay, but all of the other levels range from ultra mediocre to downright bad.

Shipping is boring and you have to backtrack to a codebox to open every warehouse etc. do it all again 5x more. Framed is very clearly unfinished as fuck, they were basically going to redo like 1/3 of the level for Thief 2 Gold if that was ever going to come out. Ambush and Trace the Courier are both just shit. Eavesdropping is short as fuck and you spend like 3 minutes with your ears against a door. Kidnap is a fucking atrocity, a totally recycled level from Thief 1 with random mechanist security shit everywhere that the level was not designed for in the first place - it does not work. The problems with Casing the Joint and Masks are obvious to anyone who has played the game - you shouldn't have to play the same level twice in a row, Thief 2 Gold was planned to add like 3 missions between them to split them up and make it less retarded but that never happened so we're stuck with vanilla T2's problems. Soulforge is a huge backtrackfest slog and is really slow for what is supposed to be the climax of the game.
>>
>>389595461
Because that would be fucking stupid. HD texture packs already exist, and the games look fine as they are. A remaster would add nothing and would only exist to fatten the pockets of some faggot publishers.
>>
>>389586556
What the fuck is this shit taste. Bonehoard is probably one of the best levels in the game. Thieves' Guild is pretty confusing/bad the first time through but it offers a lot of challenge on repeated playthroughs. Haunted Cathedral & Return to the Cathedral are fucking amazing. The Lost City is also amazing. Maw of Chaos is a perfectly fine final level for the game, about as good as you can expect a climax to be. Escape isn't great but I wouldn't call it bad either. Thief 2's levels are consistently a lot worse than Thief 1's.
>>
>>389585276
>ghosting
>not just overhead swinging all your enemies like a madman

SAD!
>>
>>389596209
Not him but Into the Maw is pretty shit. It's not bad like Escape, but it's pretty bad. It's just a long hallway then Garret has to wait for Constantine to finish his ritual then die.

>>
>>389596919
It does the job. The game has been leading up to this point and it follows on directly from Strange Bedfellows perfectly, it's meant to feel like a race to the finish to get to Constantine before he finishes his ritual (even though it's not ACTUALLY on a timer, people would probably hate it even more).

>>
>>389595775
He's not wrong. Thief is fucking clunky
>>
>>389595461
Modern game engines can't do accurate sound propagation and instead would give Garrett the magic eyes from Thi4f to see through walls to locate enemies.
>>
>>389597424
I felt that was part of its charm.

Garrett is far from perfect and isn't even that quiet despite being a master thief.

I mean the fucker is loud as shit on marble or metal flooring.
>>
>>389597424
Maybe if you failed to rebind the controls. Garrett's agile as fuck and without the cumbersomely animated context actions that plague modern games.
>>
>>389597539
It's because he's a D&D Thief that wears boots fit for dungeon crawling in smashed to shit catacombs, mines and other shitholes instead of wearing sandals or just wrapping his feet in rags.
>>
>>389586556
God damn /v/ has shitty taste.
>>
>>389597185

Well people do say that TDP is the game with horror elements.

>>389595905

I don't think that it was a bad sequel, but I'm convinced that the state of Metal Age sans remaster is what indirectly led to Thi4f. They knew people liked Life of the Party, but they didn't know why people liked the rest of the game and thus they missed the point entirely.
>>

>>
>>389598295

>Not liking burricks

>>
>>389598175
I don't think the devs of Thi4f ever played Thief 1 or 2. They probably thought Deadly Shadows was the only Thief game because it wasn't called Thief 3: Deadly Shadows, and even then they did a much, much worse job than Deadly Shadows did - and I really do not like TDS at all so that's saying something.
>>
>>389599198
They said players didn't want to not have a fully detailed map since the first one only gave you a rough sketch of the area, they probably played them but fundamentally didn't realize what made them good.

If they played TDP, then they forgot most of the details of it between announcing 4 in 2009 and release.

>Because Garrett always has this thing with the eye. We want to be true to some of the things that trademark the things you recognise from the character, that was a very important thing for us.

>It’s crystal clear since the beginning; we restart it but again, by respecting the DNA of the franchise. But no,no,no it’s not a sequel – Garrett is back, a bit like Chris Nolan did with the Batman for example. It’s Batman he still has the same mental problem with the bat and stuff like that, but his suit has more modern aspects and not just this thin Adam West … but at the same time everybody will tell you that this is Batman, there’s no problem, it respects the franchises – it emphasises what we are doing now.

They had some awareness, but really not enough:

>It’s not hazy. The people loving the franchise… I’m pretty sure in their mind, if we do something specifically… you won’t forgive us. If we don’t have this feature [punches hand], we have to be careful. We did our homework, we are ready to give you information.

so what does taffer means?
i always thought it meant like "thief", but i've seen people sometime use it as a censored word for swearing or something.
>>
>>389600906
It's just an in-universe light curseword probably equivalent to calling someone a dick I think.
>>
>>389600581
https://vocaroo.com/i/s1adiCkVyPXS
>>
>>389600906

From PC Accelerator, interview with Steve Pearsall, project designer of Thief. The question, "What is a Taffer and where did it come from?" The Answer, "One of our level designers, Laura Baldwin, made it up. Taffer was meant to be a slang word that meant a common criminal, but has evolved into meaning any sort of low life."
>>
>>389601080
This is excellent. Is that you/are you the same person as the one that made the really old vocaroo that is used in the vid?
>>
>>389600906
>>389601017
>In different languages of Thief, the word taffer does not exist.[4] In the Russian, French, and German version, appropriate curses are used instead, i.e., villain, fool, retard, etc.

>The Polish version has its own translation of taffer, "łacher". It compilates "łach", meaning "clout"; "łachudra", meaning "scoundrel, scamp, rouge"; with the suffix "er", that is used in lowbrow type dialect, and/or an indication of a persons expertise.

>The Hungarian translation uses "bumburnyák" for taffer. It is like "silly", or "poor sod" in the meaning between the original and modern usage. Similarly to "taffer", this word cannot be found in regular dictionaries and sounds comic rather than obscene so guards can say it to each other and really bad guys as well.

>Others substitute appropriate swears according to intensity, such as, "lotor", "gauner", "hajzel", "darebák", "zlodej", etc.
>>
>>389585276
I am playing Thi4f right now. Honestly it is not that bad on master difficulty with everything disabled. Atmosphere is fantastic, i also like immersive hand animations. Some missions are atrocious due to forced "cinematic" action, but Moira asylum was a lot of fun. Game could be so good with deeper exploration, more freedom and less handholding.
>>
>>389601148
>>389600906
yeah i tink i remember that in the french version, they say voleur (thief) most of the time.
don't use the word as a swear word or an insult really.
>>
>>389600906
Corruption of the word "trickster". If you're really curious the writer who came up with it talks a bit about it in this about 19 minutes in

http://gambit.mit.edu/podcasts/lgs/podcast3_tim_laura_sara.mp3
>>
>>389585380
While I'm inclined to agree I find that even though TDP/Gold had one or two annoying missions I appreciate that it had variety

MA feels like I drag towards the end because they're all pretty regular "steal/hide from people" missions

both are 10/10 though

Jumping is now a context- sensitive action. “Jumping, bouncing up and down, kind of broke the immersion,” says Schmidt. “We didn't want you to be the master thief and you just tend to fall off stuff all the time.” That's fair, but the loss of granular control when you jump feels very un-PC in philosophy. >>
>>389609868
What. I remember you can read the books to see who is in Cragscleft and what they are in for while you're there and the only one that stuck out to me as brutal/cruel is they locked away a beggar and he died of illness while there. Obviously the prison system is some medieval fucked up bullshit that kills more people than it could ever rehabilitate but the rest of the guys in there are there for rape, theft, murder, prostitution, etc. and have punishments like lashes, beatings, chopping fingers off.

The Hammers aren't the good guys but they're not the bad guys either. They are the Lawful Neutral in the name of the builder righteous punishment morally grey faction. The Mechanists/Karras is when they really become the bad guys.

Yeah, that should work in Gold still. You can also stack boxes up in the inner courtyard and climb over the wall out of the map to finish it before you meet Brother Murus.

The games atmosphere, low res graphics and things being suprisingly unpredictable at times just works so well.

Yeah, I realized it while watching it that it's a garbo tier speedrun, the guy literally stops in the middle room for like a minute. It was the first result I found when I spewed words into youtube to find the skull in door trick.

The one you posted is a lot fucking funnier.
