It's boring 90% of the time.

Even when you embark in a place that's raining dwarf blood and infested with zombies, its boring 50% of the time.

Its like a city builder that goes hands off once you wrangle the ui and esoteric systems under control.

Not enough stuff happens to force action from you. I know people always bring up Boatmurdered or that one forgotten beast that nuked their fortress, but for 90% of that fortress' life, nothing of note was happening. It's like starting a fantasy novel 10 years before the dragon attack that kicks off the main plot.

On a positive note, you will never find a more indepth fantasy world generator.

Stop expecting things to happen to you. There's a lot more to the game than just dealing with the threats that come to you. It's a city BUILDER not a city maintainer. Building things isn't hands-off at all. If you have 0 creativity or no vision of what you want your fort to be, and just sit around twiddling your thumbs waiting for the next siege for FB, then yeah you're going to be bored because you're not doing anything. So get off your lazy ass and make your fortress worthy of Armok.

Sadly the game has been in serious decline ever since a few years ago.
Toady has been prioritizing the game's "story simulator" aspect to the point where he doesn't even think it's a game anymore. As a result we now have more of the same inscrutable, useless procedural story that makes no sense, can't be navigated, and really adds nothing to the game. Meanwhile, the game keeps getting easier and buggier after every release and it still plays just about the same since 2014.

Im a complete noob that never grew a fort beyond say 30 dorfs but every time i learn and RE-learn DF my immediate ambition is to make a fuckhuge 9001-water-wheel powerplant and a large fire-proof pumpstack for a magma forge and a giant dining hall and waterfall/slash/well/slash/ main entrance and a giant 3-stage trap-laden wall-flattening obstacle course of a base entry for enemies then i get burned out

If you have mouse control enabled in dfhack then the UI is fine. Especially since you have all the hotkeys labelled by the side of the screen, and in time you learn them by heart anyway
