The characters were the best part of the PM series. Not just parners, but the bosses and the NPCs all having colorful personalities was what made the story of PM and TTYD so great. SPM only has a handful of interesting characters (most of the bosses, tippi, luigi, and bowser) but is lacking in interesting NPCs and you rarely spend time in Flip/Flopside actually talking to the townspeople like you do with the various personalities in Toad Town and Rogueport. NPC interactions with original characters carry the most favorite chapters in both of the original PMs -- glitz pit isn't fun for the 20-something forced fights or the fetchquest to get and hatch yoshi egg, its fun for the wide array of interesting OCs introduced in the chapter, from your friends in the lower rankings to Grubba and his mysterious secretary.

Yeah but the latter 2 of the first three games basically didn't give a shit about building a world, they just slapped 7 random locations together. I think one advantage they have now is that since they are trying to make a Paper World they were very meticulous about the world design in Color Splash.

I disliked that rogueport wasn't connected completely with the surrounding areas besides pipes/train/blimp, but CS/SS are still kinda segregated too because of the way levels are separated
One of the things 64 has on top of all the other games is that most of it's areas you can walk to

Dimentio was a entertaining character, but not explored nearly enough for his motivation other than the usual "I want to reshape the world to be fit for me and only meeee" cliché.

Yeah but I've replayed it and there's a part where Nastasia claimed he loved the universe more than anyone. I just think there's a huge disparity between certain parts of the writing and others. Like If the villains were really good all along how come something that shows the gravitas of their actions like the Sammer Kingdoms destruction isn't something that they reflect on or cause any of them to have second thoughts?

She literally does not do a single good thing from when she's introduced to when she becomes good. And her reasoning for joining Bleck is because she wanted a world with a pool full of rubies and lifeguards.

I just don't think the story was told very well because the villains essentially act pure evil until they need to be good in which scenario they suddenly completley flip flop, hell they don't even aplogise if I remember correctly the game just treats them as if they're good guys.

You're on point with a lot of these things, really.
The game did near the end feel incredibly rushed, and not because of the giant gaping death hole.
They did a bad job tying up the character development into a neat bow and sadly called it a day, but that doesn't take away from the established story and themes, which are still very much enjoyable and in tone with earlier Paper Mario games.

This was a good talk, though.
Not many times you can have a proper discussion on Paper Mario anymore these days.

There's also the problem of scale.
Shit like that takes years to do and you won't get a dime from it if you want to avoid DMCAs.
It'd only happen if a very well off anon were behind it that could devote years to such a project. Most anons making games are probably poor fucks that really can't give that much time.

Paper Bugs is getting by cause they can actually make a profit and the bug thing lets them reign in some scale issues rather than having to do some crazy 8 chapter multi-world thing.

Normally I'd agree with you, but in this particular case I think the cat ears make for a better sprite. The bunny ears just look a little too wide for my taste. If they were thinner, ended at a point, and had a slight bend in the middle ala >>389604628 or >>389609774 then they'd be much better.
