PS4 is about to hit 70M units soon. What went right?

I remember back in 2013 when /v/ said ther wouldn't be a PS4, and early 2014 how /v/ was in denial when it became the fastest selling console of all time.

Even Knack II is better than the latest AAA from nintendo like arms and splatoon 2

Why would I get a PS4 when I already own a PC? The only exclusive that looks interesting is Bloodborne.

I'm gonna sound like a sonybro here but it's because, at least here in Europe, it has more people on it than the Xbone and it has more games. Add in the fact it was cheaper at one point than the Xbone and all the shit that Microsoft were spouting pre-launch and it's a no brainer how it won this gen

Honestly you have to give Microsoft credit for throwing the game. The uproar about the game sharing and always on DRM caused irreversible damage to the Xbox brand. There are also no noteworthy exclusives aside from Halo (which they ruined) and Forza. Sony had success from not alienating the fanbase (aside from the switch to pay for online play) and getting a decent list of exclusives

Microsoft will win next gen. They're earning good will back from consumers with backwards compatibility and the way they're launching the One X. Meanwhile, Sony is becoming more anti-consumer as it gains more ground. MS will learn from this gen when it launches its next console while Sony will forget what it should have learned from the PS3; Xbox will return to being the dominant console brand in the US. It'll do this by incorporating full XBONE BC in its next console, coming out with the more powerful system, and having a cheaper online service than PSN+ (which Sony keeps increasing the cost of).

It really wasn't a case of Sony doing it right. It was more of Nintendo and MS doing it horribly wrong.

Ninty released the Wii U too early, and had a terrible marketing plan for it. not to mention it was weak, had a bad online system, and the gamepad had a very limited range. Microsoft was even worse with the "you can't share/sell/rent your games" bullshit. The Xbone's launch was the biggest PR disaster in gaming at the time. the Xbone just kept on having PR trouble after the launch as well. With the loss of exclusives, the "TV, SPORTS" conference, etc. The only thing Sony did was release a vastly improved PS3 and didn't try to make a big PR stink about it. It took awhile for the game to get flowing, but when they did, the gap became too large. They had captured the normalfag audience with big multiplats and the niche weeb audience with weeb games. They even blended the two demographics on occasion with games like Persona 5. Marketing and perception are incredibly potent forces. It seems like Sony, for the most part, learned from their PS3 reveal.

I'm saying this all as an Xbone owner btw. I made a horrendous mistake. I actually plan on buying a PS4 and Switch during black friday and then sell my Xbone later on.

Yeah that's literally it. Microsoft and Nintendo both screwed up around 2013-2014 which made it relatively easy for Sony to actually win. Up till then the only real viable competition Sony had was from the PC side. As soon as Nintendo released the Switch, things finally got more interesting but I seriously doubt the Switch will catch up with the PS4 but its good to have both consoles and a pc if you can afford it.

PC gaming is becoming more and more mainstream due to the prevalence of PC players in the streaming/video sphere. These people hold the greatest influence on the medium right now, and they are directing people to the PC platform. Games like Battlegrounds are also helping moving people from predominantly console to PC, as Minecraft did previously. Consoles are becoming less and less relevant, especially as more people learn the significance of computing power in relation to gaming and begin building their own high-end PCs, thus making consoles obsolete.

MS has seen the writing on the wall here, which is why their console and PC gaming platforms are converging so strongly now. They are moving towards a model that will prove more viable in the long-run than whatever Sony is doing. Sony will likely be left in the dust soon and become a complete non-player in the industry once people stop buying consoles.
