I think it's great personally, but you have to put a lot of time into it to get the most out of it. The opening hours will probably be confusing and frustrating but once you've figured out how the combat works everything starts to fall into place, and doing new game+ runs to piece the story together and clear successively higher difficulties makes the game better the more you play it.

Resonance of Fate isn't like Nier in the sense that you get new story content every time you play it, it's always the same, it's just that the way the game is structured there's often really long gaps between cutscenes which, coupled with the already confusing nature of the plot and the unconventional premise, make it hard to follow what's going on your first time through, but subsequent playthroughs make it easier to figure it out because you'll be better able to pick up on when the game's foreshadowing and understand things better. Also, after beating it once, you can do a NG+ run on the same difficulty that you just cleared (instead of going to a higher one) that lets you keep all your levels and equipment, which makes it really easy to just blow through the game going from one story mission to the next, and the story's a lot easier to follow when you do that.

Mostly by appearances, secondly by scanning.
It's pointless to use piercing or cutting based weapons against a Golem, since they're big lumps of rock/metal so common sense dictates that you smash them with clubs or whatever does blunt damage, better yet, use magic.
Dragon scales are impervious to cutting damage but they can be pierced by spears or crossbow bolts, skellies are easy to maul with blunt damage because you can grind bones to dust, but some of them also wear equipment, elementals are ghosts, which means physical damage is not that good unless you imbue your weapon with the elements they're weak to.

It's really all common sense, except again, enemies that wear equipment, like humans/humanoids, zombies, some skellies and so on.

But this is all just playing by the ruleset, truth is you can ignore any and all of this, because as long as you stack the right multiplier or attribute high enough you can steamroll anything, or you ignore even that and simply counter anything or abuse Raging Ache at low HP.

No problem, VS takes some time to get used to but it's a game that is extremely easy to bypass on any level once you understand that countering is the better strategy for every single enemy on your fresh file, as soon as you kill the minotaur you don't need to attack an enemy once in the entire game, it's a pretty fun challenge run too on a fresh file too, as long as you have the reflexes to do so of course.

I wish they did finish the game and fleshed out the mechanics a bit more though, but unfortunately, everything that isn't a FF took and still takes second place for Square.
Still a very good game for what it tries to do though, and it's a technical marvel for the PS' hardware, some real tech wizards and planners worked on this game, you don't see this level of care and smart moves often.

YES, especially if you disn't like Chloe because they are doing a full turn around on her. She is still self destructive but whatever happened in the two years before LiS she was a very sweet brat before. She does bad stuff, but you have the chance to hear what she is thinking and writing and she knows she needs to pull her life around and you have the chance for her to NOT just act like Chloe at every opurtunity, and make an effort with the people who care about her. Turns out she is secretley very thoughtful and sensitive, just damaged.
