RPG, strategy games mostly

Why not a 3DS? It's compatible with practically all DS games, plus 3DS games.

Pokemon HG/SS, TWEWY, Radiant Historia, Megaman Zero Collection, Chrono Trigger DS...

Why buy it if you don't know what you want for it?

Just emulate DS games for now, THEN get a 3DS. You can pirate any game into it with one that is not on versions 11.4 or higher. Those need a flashcart, which you'd need for DS games anyways, but until you have the money for one, just get the good 3DS games like Rune Factory Etrian Odyssey, Fire Emblem, SMT and Bravely Default 1 and 2. Shovel Knight too if you haven't played that already

You can get a used 2DS for dirt cheap and it's compatible with all the same stuff. Entire 3DS and DS library.

Ghost Trick is my favorite game on the system.
Phoenix Wright trilogy is good if you didn't play it anywhere else.
Super Robot Wars OG Saga Endless Frontier is a nice RPG with a fun battle system (You don't need to know anything about SRW, it's a standalone story)
Every Castlevania game (Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia)
If you like Dragon Ball Attack of the Saiyans is an excellent RPG and gets overlooked because it's not a fighting game.
Dragon Quest series (V and IX are the best imo)
Elite Beat Agents
