fuck that. Unless it's specifically meant to be an avatar of you like with Miis or Xbox live characters, I'll go with whatever I feel like, and whatever I feel like usually doesn't look like me.

I see my role as more like a writer or puppet master, rather than the character being an extension of me.

If I'm playing as a faceless or near faceless dude who is bland and emotionless, I feel a lot more connected, since I can project any kind of character I want onto them.
If it's a chick, I feel a lot less connected, and a little uncomfortable, but I like seeing hot girls, so that's cool.

I don't think I've ever tried self inserting as myself.

I just make a character I find attractive. I can enjoy stories without self-inserting, so it works well for me. My character looking attractive to me is more important than it looking like me

ALWAYS self-inserting, I don't find it as fun otherwise.
Unless it's a game where the character has its own development independent from me, in which case it's impossible and I just enjoy it for what it is.

Its better to be the all-powerful, unquestionable controller of fates to the hapless characters. Far greater power trip if that's what you're into.

Frankly, I enjoy putting the characters into things their pre-built biases are not built to handle, and see/imagine what would happen. That would be no fun if I saw that as happening to me, as I already know what would I do.

Instead, I project certain traits onto the character that fit the concept I have of him. The character is its own person but said person isn't me.

Usually dont self-insert, especially if the hero/Protag already has an existing personality. Kind of hard to project myself into the super monster killing, pussy slaying, self muttering Geralt

On the other hand, I self-insert HARD in strategy games, especially 4X and Grand Strategy.

I made myself during my first playthrough of Dragon's Dogma. Turned out pretty great but it was proof that I do NOT look like a hero. More like a party member or best friend.
"Idealized Me" is the way to go.

I don't think /v/ can properly self insert if the game has limits to how ugly you can make a character.

Depends on the game's story. Usually I self-insert on the first playthrough and rp on subsequent runs. For games like the OP I do neither because the character's personality is done for me.
