The presentation matters a lot for a crossover. One of the main things that get people into the game is that their favorite characters are fighting each other, so the lack of old favorites plus not many new characters turns a lot of people off.

See, I've already bought Marvel vs Capcom infinite because I genuinely think the gameplay looks like fun. It's visuals and ultimates and heart just look like shit. If I wasn't a fighting game fan I would never even consider especially after the shite story trailers they've given us. Lord only knows who's idea was it at Capcom. On the other hand DBFZ looks like a very fun gameplay wise fightan but also visually captures was DBs love about the series. The problem you're having OP is that you're using fighting games as your example.

Fighting games are already a dying breed, so you need to focus on many different fronts to attract as many people as possible for your title.

Gameplay is important, but in the specific case of fighting games it needs to be sucessful/drawing on many fronts or it will simply join the vast graveyard of dead fighting games that grows every year.

If I remember correctly, we were saying MVC3 was a downgrade compared to MVC2 when it came out and, for all intents and purposes, Vanilla MVC3 WAS a downgrade. Then UMVC3 came along and blew us away.

Capcom's Marvel games never had a relationshit like NRS+DC, where Warner bros own and fund both. Marvel/Disney just gives out the rights and it's completely up to Capcom to make the game.

Inifinite looks fun to play. I don't really enjoy the roster and the game has a few problems, like specials animations or the base roster but I'll certainly check it out before saying it's shit or not. I've always also prefered 2v2.

Also, although it's not gameplay related and doesn't matter that much, the other day I rewatched UMVC3 and MVC3 intros and they were pretty good.

It'd be neat if Infinite had something like this, but I'm not really expecting it.

I was skeptical when buying Gulty Gear Rev 2 because I didn't know any of the characters but the gameplay looked great so I got it anyway and its currently my favorite fighting game to play.
Such a shame the ps4 population is often dead in Europe, I hate having to resort to SFV when I can't find lobbies.

The Xrd "engine" (which is just a rendering path built on top of Unreal Engine) looks much better applied to DBFZ than it did to Xrd.

Also, while it's pretty fascinating that Xrd is done using 3D models, that's not meant to be a selling point of the game. They made the switch to models because models can be re-used indefinitely without re-spriting constantly and it's much easier to add or tune animations, outfits, etc. It was a cost-cutting measure that became iconic mostly because everyone was surprised to discover that it was 3D.

It's shit because there's barely any new content (only six characters), there are no interesting/unique/niche characters to surprise/excite people, and Capcom's day one nickle and diming for more characters is made more insulting by the lack of fresh content in the main game.

But really, it all stems from Capcom being too lazy and/or cheap to develop a decent amount of new characters and opting to copy paste the majorty of them from UMvC3.

It's 100% a gameplay issue. Lazy game design.

Gameplay does look interesting. That's why it's a shame everything else is bad. It is improving though, just at a bit of a slower pace than kof 14 when it was the hot fighter to shit on for looking like a ps2 game.

As someone who has followed both MvCi and DBFZ very very closely and is extremely excited for both, I can promise you this is exactly how it will play out:

Infinite will have bad presentation, bad roster, but amazing gameplay. It will last for a while and be one of the most popular fighting games for a while with steady numbers.

DBFZ will have huge launch numbers because of its gorgeous presentation and good roster, but will fade fast as fuck as people realize it had no depth and is made for the casual DBZ audience.

Sceeencap this post because it will be 100% correct. People found the maximum possible damage combos in one sitting of DBFZ. Meanwhile, Infinite looks to have a ridiculor amount of gameplay options and strategies with people only scratching the surface. Nobody feels that way with DBZF.
