That was honestly the best decision. Why waste years of your life making a super refined fan game when you can erase all the references to the original series, make an "original" game inspired by the original series and then even manage to sell it for real money?

To sell it and gain money without the risk of being C&D. Earthbound clones are still hot, if they kept the "Mother 4" title, they wouldn't have been able to make money out of it and Nintendo would have probably sent a C&D.
