Maybe someone here will correct me, but I believe life-steal is only applied to "attack skills" and not "spells"
However, there are many different ways you can go about managing your mana usage. You can even use energy shield (think Halo) which would normally protect your life value, as the source of your mana.
There are also a lot of ways to mitigate the amount spent with passive skills and support gems, which link directly to active skills and act as a modifier for the linked active skills.

You can steal life, there are more skills that regenerate life percentage-wise and more skills to reserve less mana/life for auras. Also casting from your lifepoints means you don't have to manage your MP so you can ditch increasing your INT.
