It's all about that atmosphere. The whole 'completely alone in a post-apocalyptic world' thing is one of the reasons Nocturne is so great. It has a unique atmosphere and it achieves it through a haunting soundtrack, interesting visuals and subtle world-building. It doesn't need any shitty dialogue to keep you interested

I like a few JRPGS for many different reasons. Persona specifically is a waifu simulator, however, I think you're accusation that I strictly play games for cute girls is projecting or something, because that's definitely not the sole reason I enjoy video games. I enjoy FFVII and the Suikoden games for their stories in general so the grinding wasn't as painful for me. But SMT: Nocturne is just plain fucking boring, sorry! Played for like 12 hours and still didn't really feel like there was a goal or anything, just a load of repetitive shit.

I'm in almost exactly the same boat. I figured that we don't jsut buy a random game as much as we should sometimes and picked up SMT IV on a whim. Its easily the most mediocre game I ever played but the presentation at least got me interested in the series enough to buy Devil Survivor 1, which was also medicore as fuck, and Devil Survivor 2, an actually good game.
