VIII has way faster combat. Characters actually perform actions quickly after you assign them. That's not the case in IX where everything takes forever, not to mention the ATB bar is painfully slow.
Character design in VIII is also better. Not perfect, but it's definitely better. IX's characters look fucking awful. Zidane and Amarant in particular.
The story in VIII is pretty imaginative, especially for the series, while IX is just another typical FF storyline revolving around crystals and shit. I get that that's the point of the game, but it's still lazily written.

I'm a hardcore fan with FF8, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. She immediately said, "You know you could live with us forever.." I gave her a confused look and she continued, "We understand that you live on earth and you REALLY wish to live here". I then said "How..How did you know?" She then giggled and said "Because we've been watching you, silly!"

This was a dream come true and I almost cried right there. She then said, "I talked with Headmaster Cid and he agreed that you would be PERFECT for SeeD, you just have to do...one thing". She then held my hand and looked deep into my eyes and said "...You have to kill yourself for the transfer to work correctly." I then gave her some questions, "How long do I have before the deal expires?" She then said "Cid said 3 months.." I added by saying "What's the most painless way?..." She giggled again, "Suicide will require pain buuut...if you want it quick...Get a gun and a nice shot to the head works.

I then agreed and she gave me a kiss on the forehead, "I know this will be tough but once it's over and done, you'll get to live here!" I then woke up and this was last week and i purchased a gun. I might actually kill myself because that dream just felt too real to be fake and my life isn't doing so grand.

It'd be nice if they had some quality of life shit like having a magic bank so you wouldn't have to constantly shuffle about stacks of 100 magic back and forth between characters, but would you be willing to give up being able to get horrendously overpowered magic early on? It might be more fun if the game was balanced, but it's also incredibly fun to rape Ultimecia in four turns.

Fuck yeah I would. Uematsu turned in his best work for 8(across the board, I mean. There's really no dull or weak tracks on the OST as compared to some of his earlier OSTs), it has some of the most gorgeous environments which I'd love to see remastered in proper 3D, and the story is endlessly entertaining nonsense designed to string you from one drop dead gorgeous locale to the next. All they would need to do is retune the combat system to not be so easily broken by the time you leave for Timber, and if they do feel the need to go ARPG with it, follow the Kingdom Hearts combat model instead of the slipshod mess we got with XV.

No, Squarenix has proven they cant treat their own titles with dignity anymore. I don't like FF8 particularly, but even despite that I don't think it deserves to be butchered with Squarenix's "modernization" treatment.
