You got to understand that the whole SocJus and Phil Fish business really shattered the ideal of the indie dev as saviour of the industry.
Before that, indie games an devs were absolutely everywhere, colourful retro aesthetics came in as a much wanted break from brown/gray action shooters.
Indie devs were described as those messiah that were to guide us away from the proven formulas of the game industry.

Finally and I think for the best, it all came down thanks to kickstarter fuck ups. Tim Schafer being himself, that Phil Phish etc.

There's nothing inherently wrong with indie games.
Part of the problem with crowdfunding is that the funding you get is determined by how well you can advertise a concept. Fun gameplay doesn't necessarily look good on video or in a 5 minute kickstarter pitch so you've got conceptually impressive sounding but gameplayless crap like no man's sky and star citizen, or creators that want money based on being the Twitter/YouTube attention whore of the week or supporting some meaningless concept like inclusivity or politics.
Then there's the simple fact that making a game is easier now than ever, so there's no shortage of bad devs trying to make the next Minecraft and straight up scammers releasing shovelware on steam to rip off naïve fools who think that "Early Access" is a guarantee that the game is going to get better.
