How do I survive the first few levels reliably with commando on /v/ rules? I love commando at endgame but I can never make it past the first few levels because his initial health is so low everything OHKs you, even ropehugging seems to be unreliable as eventually a jelly horde or stray funball is going to do you in.

Commando hmm, I dont really play commando much differently from other ranged classes. There's not that many tips specific to commando I can give you aside from FMJ is ludicrously good and you should spam that as much as you can. You can even oneshot jellies with it which is really useful early on.
Aside from that its mostly trying to get enough xp to level up early on coupled with just good fundamentals lmao

generally once you have a few hooves and syringes you should be strong and buffed enough to avoid attacks and deal damage safely
lategame commando is fun as hell once you have a ring and hyperthreader and other onhit items

Yeah, like I said though I can usually never get to late game just encase of the sheer amount of shit there is to avoid in 6+ player lobbies, and it seems like a lot of your luck can just be rng dependant, like if a blazing vagrant locks on to you and you don't have a few hoofs there's pretty much nothing you can do.
