Some early impressions from Gamescom and previous events:

That was in Gothic 3 which you shouldn't ever play and which might as well be non-canon.

Original Gothic games were mainly about the typical zero to hero journey in a very, very believable and at the same time low-fantasy world. Gods are handled especially well in 1 and 2 - they're mysterious, mystic, and portrayed entirely only by murals, priests, and outside things.

I'm not really hyped for ELEX because everything after Night of the Raven just presents a very clear picture that greatness of G1 and G2 was largely accidental.

Risen had similar character writing and quest desing to Gothic, though never quite as good. Its faults were mostly that it was too segmented, and running out of content towards the end and outside of the populated places.
