Most of my critiques come from Arma: Wasteland. [Such] A sandbox is really just getting gear (cars with gear, respawning in cities; respawning, AI-guarded loot chests / vehicles; and spawning with / getting money for the store), losing gear (dropping equipment / loot and money).

Some genres have crafting, but turning theme park MMO crafting into sandbox itemization is about the same amount of asset development. The tuning comes with free-roam bosses (anything from previous content/xpacs tossed into the land).

Fixing CoD/FPS is mostly about map design. The character should be making laps around the map (thus, enough size for decent spawns and ~ a few outside routes). Mobility is obviously a natural progression.
