What you played was an almost 1:1 remake of the first game, primitive systems and all that, so by going (somewhat) chronological you can't go wrong
Therefore look no further than the Gameboy Advance FEs

FE games are usually one-off stories, though there are some direct sequels (New Mystery of the Emblem is the sequel to SD that takes place 3 years later). The best ones are usually considered to be the console games (4, 5, TRS, 9, 10) but the three GBA games and two of the 3DS games (Fates: Conquest and Echoes: SoV) are good too. I'd recommend playing either FE7 (Blazing Sword, released as just Fire Emblem in the west) on GBA or Path of Radiance on Gamecube next.

Actually, now that I think about it, you should probably just play the sequel to SD if you're not burned out. It wasn't released in English (unfortunately true of about half the series), so grab the translation patch here and apply it to a JP rom

I've seen that people regard Shadow Dragon as one of the worst games in the series. I want to get into the series but don't have the SD Card space for the 3DS games and I don't have a (working) gamecube controller for Path of Radiance. Is Shadow Dragon still a decent entry point?

It's an ugly but otherwise faithful remake of a NES game. If you're okay with something short and not particularly impressive it's a fine game to start with.
