I can forgive it since Bungie was under a lot of pressure from Microsoft. A lot more content than just that had to be cut. I think maybe half the game? I may be wrong about that though. All things considered it turned out great.

Literally play Halo 2 Anniversary, in regards to both visuals and gameplay, especially the multiplayer for the latter

that being said, I think H5's gameplay does a good job of significantly adding and improving on classic halo's gameplay (wheas H2A's MP's changes were more minor and subtle) without changing it in the wrong ways: It preserves even starts while just adding new movement mechanics that mesh well with Halo's vertical level design.

I legimately wish the thruster packs and clamber was added to the series before and wish it was there when I replay CE, 2, and 3 now.

How about you actually explain what you dislike about it or why it's bad instead of just making banal insults without presenting an arguement. I've been playing the games since CE came out and was actually reading The Fall of Reach before CE even launched when I found it in a book store a few days before CE released.

Halo is an arena shooter, and a key part of arena shooters are advanced movement mechanics, especially highly vertical movement. That's the one area Halo has always lacked relative to other titles in the subgenre: Movement was slow and relatively simple, and while maps were highly vertical, there wasn't much advanced or heavy vertical movement, only what you could do with basic jumping, and crouchjumps and grenade jumps.

H5 adding advanced movement systems brings it closer to it's arena shooter roots and makes the gameplay feel a lot more fluid and dynamic, without hurting the core of what makes Halo Halo.

The more movement variety there is, the less predictable a players' position will be - that's fine for titanfall, unreal, etc. etc. but this is Halo and Halo was not designed around highly variable movement speeds. The thing is, I don't think the added movement systems hurts those things you mentioned. And I agree that tactical positioning and flanking was a huge part of what halo does well relative to other shooters, and, if anything, that 5 just handles it better. There's more interesting angles and pathways to move and shoot across the map without them being so numerous and unconvential that you get pinged by a BR or DMR or magnum and then can't do shit, there's still opounitiers to change the tables mid-encounter via clever play and use of the terrain.

The fact that 5 actually has every gun be decent enough to do well with helps too, vs just a few guns being useful outside of power weapons like 2 or 3.

Literally sounds to me like you don't even know or remember what Halo's identity as a multiplayer shooter was and you always just viewed it as a slow arena shooter. Halo wasn't Quake, Halo was Halo.

Disregarding that, "the core of what makes Halo Halo" extends far beyond the multiplayer, into a multitude of other realms where 343 consistently dropped the ball.

Why the hell do people keep saying this as if it's a good thing? The AR and SMG aren't supposed to be effective at long range.

If you're dumb enough to try and take on someone using a BR with an AR at range then you deserve to be killed. However a skilled player who understands positioning can make use of automatics at mid/close range. It's all about understanding the scenario and reacting.

Sure, and I agree that 343 has done a shit job at making 4 and 5's visual design be in line with the spirit of the series, among similar stuff, but I wasn't defending those things, I was defending the mechanics.

And they aren't effective at long range in 5, the AR is just actually somewhat effective at medium range if you burst fire, and the SMG is usable out to close-medium even if it's still not great there. And in the recent tuning update announcement, 343i has said they'll be tweaking the AR to be less good when sprayed, but better when the player using it is using accurate bursts; and also scaling the SMG range back slightly, so that should assuage your concerns.

of course, but if a player uses a BR or carbine or DMR at AR or SMG ranges in past games, they could still do reasonable well, as they can at every range. Automatics have never had either the raw DPS output or range verstality relative to preicsion weapons to justify using them, and most maps weren't designed in such a way with such close quarters that trying to was even possible, let alone viable.

This has consistently been my number 1 issue with the series and thing I wish was fixed. They needed to either make them do more damage inside their intended range, and/or make them more versatile, which is what they did.

Reach > 3=ODST > Wars > 2AMP > 2 > Wars 2 >> 4 > 5, IMO. I'm not even including CE due to it being even older then 2 and super limited visually by it's own models and textures. Going by concept art, i'd put it probably below 2 but above Wars 2

I actually think 343 got a lot right with H5's maps. It's a return to CE/2 style highly vertical maps, and they have a ton of really neat pathways you can discover via experimentation with the new movement mechanics.

But in terms of actual layout and visual design they are pretty lacking.

MCC's version is much better thanks to the re-addition of certain shaders that were missing it's original classic mode and higher framerate/resolution and is pretty much the ideal way to play CE, bet it in classic or new graphics
