Angband. I like vanilla, Sil, and Poschengband most, so I'll lump them all under "Angband."

ADOM in second, probably.

>>389415098
I really can't imagine playing roguelikes on mobile.
>>
>>389414864
Doesn't it let you unlock new stuff after each "run" (even if the player dies)? I hate that shit. Maybe I'm thinking of another nu-roguelike, though.
>>
Brogue
>>
What's a good rougelike for a beginner to the genre? I've played a little Elona and DF, but not enough off either to really understand anything.
>>
>>389416025
DoomRL
AliensRL.

Both are pretty Baseline, simple control schemes, very limited loadouts. But they're both fun as fuck.
>>
>>389415702
oh no, it doesn't have that stuff, I dunno what you're thinking of. binding of isaac, maybe?
>>
>>389416025
Angband's early levels are very forgiving. It's also very well-documented, so if you don't mind reading a relatively short manual before playing, it's great for beginners.

In this vein, Sil (and Angband variant) has an even better manual.

Brogue is good for beginners, too, if you want something even closer to the original Rogue, and based more on equipment than on class/race decisions. I don't like it for those reasons, but I still think it's a good introduction to roguelikes.

The one that actually got me into the genre is a gba/ds Homebrew called powder. Pretty basic and it doesn't have sound, but the graphics are actually pretty nice for a roguelike and the gameplay is simple enough to be beginner friendly without feeling dumbed down.
There's also an Android port but the controls are pretty terribad. Still hoping the dev updates it one day, if it were given sound and a little polish, it'd be pretty fantastic.

Alternatively, another very beginner friendly roguelite is desktop dungeons. The new version is totally different and costs money, but the original version is still free on the official website. As opposed to podwer this one is very dumbed down, but it's meant to be played it little bite sized runs so it works well.

>>389416175
No, not Binding of Isaac. It was another one that is actually close to being an actual roguelike.

After further reading, Dungeons of Dredmor seems pretty good.

I've played the hell out of it, and enjoy it so much. Yes, it's good for beginners. It may not feel like a full-fledged roguelike, because it's more of a puzzle game - but a lot of the gameplay decisions are still there.

And yes, get the freeware version. The actual paid version sucks.

Like all roguelikes, all the best ones are free.

what's wrong with it?

all I know is I fucking hate it, too. more often then not you're doing shitty runs/suicide runs to unlock things that are straight upgrades
either that or "0.000125% chance to find"

Why exactly did people start calling games that are nothing like Rogue "Rogue-likes"?
>>
>>389416750
I thought the other anon said there was none of this "unlocking" shit?

no, I mean, when games DO have it, it's annoying

Binding of Isaac :^)
>>
>>389416882
Became a buzzword because some clueless gamers equated it with "hardcore."

>>389416979
Ahh, I see now. While it's not a roguelike, it's one thing I don't like about FTL (though FTL has larger issues than this).
>>
>>389416632

Thats how you git gud.

Dungeon crawl stone soup is pretty fun. I've managed to beat the game twice after hundreds of runs but my wins were pussy runs (3 runes) compared to the glorious 15 rune win.

I've had a really good demonspawn fighter run but I soiled it by trying to go for 15 runes.

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is fun
