Just started the prime trilogy now, and I am in love. Still, it doesn't seem fair to compare it to the others, which are of a different style. I'm also due for another play-through of the series, but as I recall:

I liked all all of them, but I prefer some over others.

No Prime because I get physically ill playing those games and I'm not joking. I've beaten only Prime 1 and had what is perhaps the worst nauseous feeling by the time I finished it. I think it has to do with the FOV or just how much is cluttered on screen.

In the end, I thought Prime 1 was okay.
Biggest gripe is how the game makes you take the longest route possible to backtrack to areas and it does it so often it fuckin pisses me off

So I haven't paid any attention to Samus Returns until checking some gameplay out today and... what the fuck? Are people actually excited for this? It looks as awful as Mirror of Fate.

Graphics and animations are hideous, the melee counter is as ill-conceived and bizarrely important as that boost thing from Mighty No. 9, the game starts with all these on-screen messages explaining the controls, there's bad looking cutscenes.

I mean, the game just reminds me so much of Mirror of Fate. Like that it's trying to force a 3D game's mechanics into a 2D map, but here it's Other M instead of Lords of Shadow.

I'm as big a Metroid fan as they come but it looks like this is just going to prove what I've been saying since Other M came out: if they don't have a top-tier team available to make a Metroid game, I'd rather they not bother instead of putting some bad second/third party on it like Yoshi's New Island just so they can say "we have a new Metroid game!"

Prime > AM2R > ZM = Super > Corruption > Fusion = Echoes > Other M > Hunters (singleplayer) > 2 > 1

I did not play FF because I don't care

There's really no point. Aside from the weird spinoffs and the one legitimately bad game, you should play all of them. The only point in such a list is coming up with reasons to yell at each other, which Metroid doesn't need more of. Or talk about what you want more of in the future, which is of some merit. The main series is similar enough that it's really just a debate about the portable, narrated nature of Fusion or the out of suit segment of Zero. Then you can debate the differences between the Prime and the main series, but both are probably getting more games anyway so it's more a matter of finding a reason to yell at each other again. Maybe play Zero Mission or AM2R/Samus Returns if you absolutely can't stand the NES/GB era gameplay.

Aside from Other M, there's not a single major Metroid game you shouldn't just play no questions asked, so who cares what retarded ranking people want to bitch about? It's not like there's so many you should skip one of them for time.

I like Fusion too, great taste.

I would love to put Super Metroid in first place as it has the best variety in areas and lots of cool powerups, and sequence breaking, but I find switching between weapons extremely tedious, and most of the bosses are clunky. I get my immersion broken by the controls more often than I would like.

Fusion feels more responsive to play and throws so many awesome fights your way in such a short time. I think some of the areas look samey and it is more linear but in terms of gameplay and challenge it is awesome. Also nothing compares to that Super Missile power spike, so satisfying rapid firing a barrage of Super Missiles and blowing shit to smithereens.

Prime 2 remains my all time favorite, even though it's the Majora's Mask of the series, the three main areas are so distinct and atmospheric and I love the Dark and Annihilator beams. Also SANCTUARY FORTRESS.

The Metroid Prime trilogy is one of the best executed examples of taking a 2D series and making it 3D. You might think they suck but your opinion is not the norm. As a single package the Metroid Prime trilogy is outright one of favorite videogames of all time, but each entry on its own is really lacking in an area or two that the others excel at so it's hard for me to recommend one over another. I also greatly prefer the Wii controls to the Gamecube controls, so I'm just going to rate the collection separately from the original releases.
