Arena is far too detached from the lore as we know it, and suffers from simple mechanics and sparse content.
Daggerfall still has the detached generic D&D bestiary, but it established a lot of lore for Morrowind to follow up on. However, the nature of the procedurally generated land and dungeons means it is a game that will get old very quick.

I was really hoping Skyrim would one up Oblivion's side quests but they managed to one of the biggest 180s I've ever seen in a sequel as every quest was pretty much a Dragur killing simulation.

I think it's going to stay that way until we have a better AI that can come up with entirely new quests, do voice acting, etc. on its own. It probably won't be any time soon but that's the only way I can see an open world game not having a ton of filler content. Even Morrowind had a bunch of filler content and empty land.

Skyrims combat added a lot of well needed diversity in combat. From the extra effects on desteuction spells (frost reduces stamina and movement speed) to the extra perks depending on your weapon choice (armor pen for maces and war hammers etc), to the dual casting and have a different spell in each hand, as well as the different velocities of spells depending on the type (lightning spells tend to be almost instantious where as frost spells have a lot of travel tine). That's not even mentioning the that they made daggers actually relevant, things like ward runes, slow time while blocking, shouts, etc.

If you're having a hard time killing stuff as a pure mage try using magic regen over raw magicka increase and instead of dual casting, cast to seperate spells at once. If you want to be super overpowered with destruction just sinply use the ignite spell you get from the dragonborn DLC.

Hint: Skill Checks don't make a quest good. They help, but a bad quest isn't made good because the devs decided to throw in a skill check or two, and wait a second, I don't remember any skill checks in Morrowind anyway.

Honestly it's not as bad as people say, and not as bad as I thought going into it. You hit almost all the time, and I like that weapon damage is decided solely by quality and your Strength stat. That being said, it's still somewhat repetitive and the fact that it's hard to hit a Kwama Forager with a dagger if you suck with Short Blade is still stupid.

Lack of skillchecks and alternate solutions DO make an RPG quest bad. You like the writing and the storyline and the visuals? That's great, but that's not what makes an RPG quest good. Might as well praise GTA's sidequests, if those are your standards. RPG quests should allow for multiple approaches gated by your character's stats and skills, and Oblivion offers almost nothing in that department.

It's also piss easy. Focus on Agility and a weapon and you will never miss. Once you are level 20+ you steamroll everything. Morrowind isn't hard, and it offers less involvement compared to the other Elder Scrolls, plus the animations themselves are retarded. None of the Elder Scolls games have had good combat, and they are all equally medicore due to their own personal flaws.

Morrowind's Dungeons, while having somewhat more variety in the loot, are just as bad design-wise. There's nothing interesting about hallways with Urns or Shrines after you've cleared out a few, but the possibility of unique loot is enough. That being said, I agree that Oblivion's leveled equipment rewards is a flawed system, but the rest of the leveling is fine. It promotes Efficient Leveling which adds another layer to the game.

Sorry but if you honestly think a quest with shitty forgettable writing but a few skill checks is better than a well written quest without them, you're beyond help. As someone who grew up with morrowind I would agree.

Morrowind quests often left you turned around and confused because of how vague they were, and while the 'roll to hit' mechanic isn't necessarily bad it can get really irritating when you're getting your shit pushed in by 30 cliffracers in brown mountain range #10000

Most of morrowinds problems were due to technical limitations though
