Perhaps it's because I've played 7, 8, and 9 back-to-back-to-back and am suffering gaming fatigue, but I really do prefer 8 to 9 in just about category except story.

IX is slow rehashed nostalgia-bait that tries too hard to be "likeable" at the cost of removing depth.

As much as people complain about VIII's cast, there isn't anyone who blatantly exists solely to pad out your roster like Quina or Amarant in IX.

Not enough build customization (something VIII excels at), a less appealing art style (unless you like furry shit), and in my opinion a weaker soundtrack make IX an inferior game.

I'd go as far as to say both 7 and 8 are better than 9, but that's no knock against it. There's only two objectively bad FF games and neither of them are on the PSX.

I liked 8's story and music more, characters are about equal with some being shit and some great, and 9 obviously gets gameplay since 8 is way too easy. Personally though, I think what really sells me on 9 more is the 8's romance conclusion is good but not great, whereas 9 really sold you on it's final shot. 9 also had some great art direction, I liked how varied the landscapes and NPC's were

I'm not equally familiar with a lot of the FF games, but can some people list characters from the series as well written as Vivi or who got shafted as hard as Freya by the writers?
