Are you people high? That is literally what it does. If you want to go on some stupid tantrum about the difference between subject and topic ha/ga particle: I can stop you right that, because that only applies when both are present in the sentence, and linguistically speaking it creates a compound sentence (Ha marks the subject of the superordinate sentence, ga subject of the subordinate, where the superordinate usually omits the predicate).

I was eating and I'm watching a show at the moment. Now I'm finished eating and watching this episode, I'm going to try and make some progress in Gundam Breaker, since I stopped playing it roughly this time last year midway through the second chapter.

More importantly, this takes much less concentration than studying. I haven't studied in years.

I can assure you that here I can get away with saying incredible shit, nonsense, butchering of language that I would never get away with in a real life context, that is for sure. Japs themselves talk like retards most of the time online. But try talking with your anime-based knowledge of Japanese to a Japanese business partner and we'll see how well that will go for you.

I really do know what I'm talking about too. I've learned Japanese from anime well enough to waste time on 2chan and various forums, to translate tons of animes and VN's, and to think I actually know the language.

Then I had to start dealing with real world Japanese people, in person, and spend another nice two years UNLEARNING most of what I thought was right, because the reality is harsh and cruel, and Japs don't really tolerate 20 years old men talking like teenagers or worse yet, teenage girl which I'm going to be is going to be your case in anything beyond the absolute most superficial contact.

Yeah, but it's required at some point obviously, since otherwise learning Japanese would be easy and any of the guides bandied around on here wouldn't say stuff like "if you're going to learn Japanese you've got to put a shit ton of time and effort in otherwise you'll fail".

I can't really do that. Anything which takes a lot of effort, isn't actively fun, and isn't required for me to go on living quickly falls by the wayside. Why do you think I play videogames other than that they're easier than doing real life stuff, and fun? Any game that isn't quickly loses my interest.

Gundam's a good example. I only got back into Gundam Breaker 3 now because I played the Gundam Vs beta over the weekend. I hadn't played it before, and I'm not any good at fighting games, so I found it difficult and kept getting beaten. So I stopped playing it, and went back to Breaker because it's basically the same thing but easier.
>>
>>389362417
I know Japanese and can speak it fluently, I just don't know where to play untranslated games.
>>
>>389366438
I could. That does not mean I could have done it well enough, or could have trained the right one. Neither could you. But really, this is your problem, not mine. You'll eventually get really laughed out one day.

>>389366467
>So what's actually the difference when speaking to businessmen?
No, but there is a huge number of small subtle differences, starting with those you probably know (basic formalism or use of proper pronoun), to intonation and even syntax.

As my old teacher said about fifteen to twenty times each session to all of the damn kids who came in thinking they know Japanese from anime "what you said is technically right, but it's not what an actual Japanese person of your age and statute would say." It's an incredibly contextual language, driven by routines and established formalisms that you have NO idea about more than the actual grammar.

"Impossibly formal" language, which I suspect is what you think real world keigo is called, is the least of your problems. In fact keigo, unless you fuck it up VERY seriously, is where you get away with a lot more, because not even the Japs use it all that often and therefor they themselves don't quite have the ear for it.
>>
>>389365094
That's why pre-made decks are garbage. The way to do it is to make your own deck, and key in the kanji and your mnemonics as you go.

If you're doing RtK, you can usually do about a chapter a day (for earlier chapters at least), depending on time constraints. If that takes too long, there's usually a few points during the chapter where new primitives are introduced, those are also good stopping points.

I am, im in a JP1 class at my local JC for fun (graduated college a year ago). I'd like to commit and use it for subtitling or localization for media companies, but I think I'd need to study abroad to really get some good language immersion. 10 mins a day isn't hard. And because you'll learn so fast it is actively fun. The feeling of progress at the beginning could help you get out of that rut.

Slowly expand it to 20 minutes, eventually an hour, going at your own pace.

People go on about how difficult or time consuming it is but like any language, it's no big deal if you just do it everyday.

>>

>also pretty sure it should be this should be していました。
Not unless he was doing it ten minutes ago but suddenly stopped. Because that would be a past tense.
However I think a more natural way would be します rather than しています. I think both can fly, in theory, but present continuous in Japanese is slightly different than in English, because it generally talks about process that is happening right now, while present simple something happening repeatedly or commonly, but not going on right now, as well as double as future tense.

本語を勉強しています (without time specification) would be understood as "I'm learning Japanese) where as 本語を勉強します would be either understood as "I study Japanese" or as "Will planning to study Japanese".
However, in that sentence (correctly: 本語を毎日します, probably) as the time is specified, you don't need the present continuous anymore.

At least - I think. I have not being using my Japanese in almost a decade.

Just to give you an idea of how lazy I am, I failed my physics degree exams at the first year despite attending every lecture due to lack of studying. I got put on retakes and still didn't study enough and flunked out.

It takes me a long time to learn things, and I forget and lose interest easily. I used to draw as a hobby for years from when I was a kid, loved it. But a few years back when I realised (thanks in part to /ic/) I was shit, I looked at the amount of effort it would take to learn to draw properly and straight up dropped it. I haven't drawn more than doodles since.

I'll never make it this way, I need to stop wasting my time here, after genki I'm leaning on printing Tobira and after Tobira if I'm not at the level to read untranslated VNs I'll just stop studying japanese.

Yeah but I don't have many friends who speak Japanese, plus I get financial aid for my classes so its free, so no reason not to try them. Not only that but I'm already in talks with my current professor about potential study abroad plans. I'm 25 and pretty committed to the prospect. If it doesn't work it doesn't work but I'm trying as best as I can for now. Learning a language and gaining true cultural understanding isn't a race, it takes time

This happens to every /jp/ meme, it languishes in irrelevance for four or five years, crossposters steadily shilling it on other boards, until it gets rehosted on some 'Funniest otaku memes!' facebook pages, the hooks of mainstream culture dig into it, and it is assimilated into the fold of teenaged pseudo-comedy.

The prospect of learning a new language is depressing because I'm an English language author. I enjoy being good at writing. If I swap to Japanese I'm gonna be bad at it for at least eight or ten years.

If you're going to be monolingual it's ideal that it be in English, anyway.
Plus machine translation is getting very close to 1:1. Probably not very many of you realize how good it is right now. I challenge you to go to the Russian-language wikipedia, choose a featured article, and feed it through Google Translate. The result could often be something that was natively written in English except for one or two errors. I will follow up with an example from the current front page of the Russian wikipedia.

Spending thousands of hours learning a language when digital babelfish is soon to be a reality is unwise.

This art makes me angry. Shinji's mouth is an inch away from his ear. More importantly, Asuka has on some kind of doe eyes open mouthed generic anime expression instead of an irate or embarrassed glare. Her hand also isn't properly resting on the curvature of her glute, it appears to be grasping air.

This is the kind of CG which was pumped out by a salaryman who had to google the characters ten minutes before he was scheduled to start drawing.

Honorifics? It depends. I'm kind of torn on it. Some I translate, some I just omit.
>>
I've made a start on reading a visual novel but it's torture so far. Managed to play through Dragon Quest XI easily enough though which was my goal.
>>
>>389376967
Some translation philosophy here: you're there to facilitate understanding and combat ambiguity.

These two things are at odds. To make the audience understand, you must translate. But every time you translate, ambiguity (or, difference from the origin script) is introduced.

If your audience understands what honorifics mean, it's ideal to leave them alone. If you're translating tax software aimed at middle aged men who have no idea what 'san' means, go ahead and translate it.
>>
>>389377283
Yeah, I thought about that with this Eva game. Particularly in regards to itadakimasu and gochisousama. Wasn't sure what to translate them as, or even if to translate them, since Evangelion somewhat mandates a degree of weebness.
>>
>>389375506
>implying it will ever actually be accurate
>>
>>389377475
It will. Like I said, go run Russian, French or German wikipedia articles through Google Translate. The result might as well have been written in English to start with.

Three years ago the result was just as janky and inaccurate as current Japanese machine translation is.
>>
>>389377729
French and German were never that bad
>>
>>389377729
Those languages work well because they are similiar to English. Japanese changes a lot depending on context and is completely different from English. Then add a bit of slang and the translator shits the bed
