This. I was promised the left. I wanted to be able to play my immersive 1st person RPGs in VR for the comfy level and to be able to look at my surroundings. I wanted to play my flight simulators or flight arcade games and look around the cockpit and out the window. I wanted to play my strategy games in a mode where a virtual monitor was in front of my with statistics and information all around like a HUD. I wanted games to be designed with this in mind as a side feature.

I didn't want 15723 shovelware VR """Experiences""" where I have to buy an expensive setup, move my furniture and use wiimotes to shoot at things. Fuck this. This is not what we were promised

>WAHHHHHHH WAHHHHHH BUT PEOPLE GET MOTION SICKNESS BECAUSE INNER EAR PROBLEMS
Put a fucking warning label instead of letting a few people with a weak stomach ruin it for everyone
>>
fuck yeah couch skiing
>>
>>389358226
>STOP THE "TELEPORTING TO MOVE AROUND" BULLSHIT
Don't they have to do that to avoid giving people motion sickness? Really until the MS problem gets solved, VR will remain unviable for making actual video games.
>>
Never experienced Vive or Oculus yet, but I went to Six Flags a few weeks ago, and they offered a version of that column ride (the one where you just rise up in the air, and it just suddenly drops you down) with Samsung Galaxy VR. With the VR, it makes you feel like you're in a helicopter swaying side to side, even though in reality, you're just dropping straight down. I was impressed how, despite the graphics being shit, it still felt immersive.
>>
>>389358648
Motion sickness depends on the person. Most vr games now give the option for trackpad locomotion or some abiltiy to use your arms to move for those who are resistant to it.

>>
>>389358648
Most people grow over it.
Around 20% never do though.
Serious sam vr is the first full vr game that lets you pick what ever controls you want for walking
>>
yeah, I just want to play like I usually do but with a VR headset
its not that hard damn it
>>
I'm gonna wait on vr until it's a pod you lay in like in my korean web novels
>>
>>389354891
Problem is:

VR gets a lot better with touch controls. On top of that, having actual movement in VR with lots of depth changes can cause a lot of Motion sickness. This keeps me from playing Subnautica for more than 10 minutes.
>>
>>389358648
>Don't they have to do that to avoid giving people motion sickness?
Teleporting around isn't the only way.
It's so prevalent because the cheap indie fags churning out the tech demo garbage can't be bothered to try something else or look for other solutions.
Eagle Flight and RE7 had other methods implemented (limiting FOW during sharp turns and stuff like that, detailed in some of the devs interviews) and loads of options you could mess with till you were comfortable with the 'non teleport' motion.
>>389354891

>>389354891
Controllers other than gamepads can do wonders for immersion.
Look at the picture.
Shit looks awful, like some plumber in love with Move controller designed it but when you try it in game where it's properly implemented you'll notice the difference.
You aim by actually aligning sights.
You can look through scope, not because you pressed the designated ZOOM button but because you moved your sniper rifle's scope close to your face.
Want to switch weapons? Hang it on your shoulder and pick another.
Beats remote / wand / normal controller any day.
>>
>>389356991
>VR games are pretty underwhelming
VR is fine as is, most of the games are lame though.
>>
>>389360334
>Motion sickness depends on the person
Considering it's roughly 80% of people that are affected by VR motion sickness I'd say your statement is misleading or even dishonest
>>
>>389362651
>VR is fine as is

Needs better resolution per eye and proper infinity focus, which would solve a lot of motion sickness issues and improve flight sims enormously by allowing jetplanes to be rendered and visible beyond an average man's pissing distance.

It might not be revolution, but it's alive and evolving.

you have to actually drop mags and pull the slide/bolt on weapons to reload them
you can fire around corners like you would IRL instead of nose-gunning + strafe because the gun isn't attached to your face
throwing grenades and swinging a knife is as intuitive as IRL
you can fuck with other players by pulling mags out of their guns
also arming the bomb requires you to actually punch in the numbers on the screen instead of just holding the use key

it's pretty fun and the community is big enough that you'll always have a full S&D or TDM server to play on

>>
>>389376560
Another anon here but this is correct. That shit in the 90's was nowhere close to VR and whoever said it was were marketers or people who fell for the marketing speak like Microsoft's current effort with "mixed reality" headsets that are really just VR headsets. Obviously the ideas are similar (motion tracking, head mounted displays, etc.) but the tech is way more advanced these days to the point where we can actually call it some form of VR.

And to be clear, how we count something as VR isn't actually that "confusing". The device doesn't simply need to be an attempt at VR, it also needs to achieve a neurological effect wherein the perceptual inputs as a whole produce an effect on the brain that stimulates the sense of geographical location. In other words, human brains constantly perceive the world and have an intuitive "sense" of where we are in it. If the VR device doesn't satisfy enough inputs in the correct way, then it will feel more like a TV floating in front of you. Today's device are good enough that for many moments, the displays feels transparent, activating the neural paths in your brain that sense locality.
>>
>>389372250
what games did you play
>>
>>389377976
Not to mention Oculus. I mean come on just because Facebook can afford it doesn't mean they WOULD. Obviously they like money, so if VR was such a failing market, why are they continuing to announce more games and more software and more hardware? Oculus has announced that their content funding is already for games that will release in 2019.

Then of course we have so many investments from other companies that show only signs of growth. Google, Microsoft, Acer, Asus, LG, Lenovo, Apple, etc are all getting in on the game and making hardware, although some may be more secretive about it.

VR is in a weird place, ussually I can laugh at something like this with abandon just by looking at how much Japan is ignoring and go my marry way, but Japan is kinda looking at VR and trying to see if it can go anywhere with it as well which puts it in a weird place that most fads don't manage to get to, that weird middle ground of maybe going somewhere not completley dead yet because both the west and Japan are doing small stuff with it.

You analysis of something you have never tried is less than worthless. Show a link of what technology you were prototyping so we can analyze it's technological premises. Motion capture technology for example; while attempting to reach the same endgoal, can be radically different. Early rudimentary motion capture control simply calculated differences in colors between frames as motion. Modern motion capture actually creates a 3D skeleton and can thus keep detailed track of a still object.

>>389389890
We're two different people smart guy.
Where is the screen on a VR headset? It's relatively close to your eyes. Like something needs to be atleast 4-5" away from my glasses to be completely focusable. But even then if it's really close to that range it might require the eyes to strain in order to get it in focus. (The muscles for your eye in that case are constricting your pupils in order to widen the depth of field. So even in that case it's not comfortably focusable. The ideal solution would be adjustable screen position.

>>
>>389358425
I wanted the left but ended up liking the right more. It was completely unexpected to me. I simply wanted the immersion and depth perception. The motion controllers I considered secondary but room scale is my favorite thing about VR now after playing with it. I also enjoy the different freedom of movement systems some games have in place like arm sway to move forward, really helps with motion sickness. Aiming and firing a weapon in VR is really satisfying. I couldn't do FPS on a controller anyways. I hate it and I suck at it.

>>
>>389390390
>>389390824
VR headsets have powerful optics in them that focus the image from its physical 3 inches from your face out to about 20 feet from your face. If you are nearsighted you will still need to wear glasses to undo some of the effects of the lenses in the headset and bring the focus point closer.

the dev kits actually had lenses you could swap so you wouldn't need glasses but they did away with that for the consumer models for some reason.
>>
>>389388149
>how the fuck can nearsightedness apply across virtual distances
god dammit, anon
>>
>>389391579
>did away with it
Probably because reliable hardware to create a sliding diopter big enough to encompass an entire VR headset would cost a retarded sum of money.
>>
>>389391749
Or you could, you know, have swappable lenses in set distances.
>>
>>389391904
That would cost even more money to have enough different vision corrections on tap to encompass the entire general population.
>>
>>389391462
Raggedy Annis a pretty famous character. One Raggedy Ann doll was said to be haunted
>>
>VR without motion controls
Literally sticking a monitor to your face and still losing the immersion.
>>
>>389391954
The dev kit had three sets. One infinity focus set like the consumer models, and two less distant sets. For example a TV across the room distance, arms length, and last a common cell phone viewing distance. One or more of these sets will encompass the vast majority of the population. This isn't expensive, and you can even sell the additional sets separately.

Right now the only option is to wear your glasses, or order prescription lenses to redundantly place over the stock lenses.
>>
>>389354891
So you don't want motion controls with vr? I don't get what all the effort is for then. The whole fucking point seem to make it as real of an experience as possible. You're just putting the monitor on your face with that.

theres nothing more they can do with camera. you look around with the controller/mouse, its not like your TV can swivel around you in a circle.

VR is amazing for first person perspective games because you can just turn your head to look around. its much more natural because IRL you don't turn your entire body to look at everything all the time, you just turn your head. AAA devs either dont understand or just dont care so were left with indie devs making gimmicky games where you walk around a room bumping into walls and use clunky "virtual hands".

I got myself an Oculus Rift yesterday and tested everything VR has to offer. It's already packed up again and going straight back to Amazon. It's way to uncomfortable to use over any longer period of time and it's like looking at an old 800px CRT monitor without wearing classes while suffering from mild shortsightedness. Sure, when I see the depth of an hangar in Elite it's cool, it's cool to see the cars driving on those lanes and follow them with your head or look behind your stool, but that's it. I don't feel very immersed, because the image quality is bad and even then I came to realize that immersion is a fucking meme. I much prefer to be able to talk to other people, just jump up from my chair and do something else or tab out and browse without raping my face trying to get the face crusher rift off my head.

What a fucking shocker.

Basically all you're doing is dismissing games that YOU don't like as "tech demos". Anybody that's buying VR now knows they're getting into it for the fun online experiences and arcade style/speed running/rhythm games.

If you don't like arcade games, that's your depressed pile of shit opinion that you're free to hold on to.

If you're lying in bed with your motorized bluetooth bunghole strapped to your dick then I don't think that'd really matter.

Also, VR porn would give Japanese some much needed incentive to get modern PCs. I know they are 10 years behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to PCs but that's because they don't see the value in it until they realize that you can't buy porn games on Playstation VR and 3DS.

Porn has always been an anchor business for PC gaming in Japan. The problem is that porn games have not been impressive enough to convince many Japanese players that PCs are worth owning. Looking at all the Japanese made mods for Skyrim and Fallout though it looks like there's definitely a budding market over there-- it just needs some coaching.

I think that the game to really sell VR will be some kind of MMO or group multiplayer game that focuses on capturing the player's hand movements and gestures along with voice. Anyone that played a ton of WoW knows that there were always groups that stood around talking a lot, and most people would jump around or animate themselves to help express themselves. I think VR has the capacity to add the most natural and communicative gesticulations into normal player interactions. The idea that you could be standing next to someone in a game and flash them a thumbs up, simply point at something to draw attention to it, or wave at someone far away sounds like some of the missing elements of realism that people want so badly in VR.
>>
>>389363693
Because it's something that's cool for an hour at most and then it fucking sucks. Of course people are going to be blown away from a demo. It doesn't wear thin and you don't pay money for it. Using it beyond that shows the limitations of the device.
>>
>>389404864
MMOs cost an insane amount and the install base is negative.
>>
>>389405134
That's why I think it might be more likely that a "group multiplayer" game is what does it. I think the inclusion of hand gestures is the real future that will make people feel that VR is worth it.

well it's simple: it needs a level of computing power, development time and cost hikes videogame technology in general have been avoiding like plague.

Just make it incrementally better until it gets to the point where we have this:

>high enough resolution that we can't see the screen door or pixels no matter how hard we try
>$300 or less

Everything else will solve itself after that. If it has that capability, people will be able to use the headsets for infinite virtual monitors alone and more will adopt such that publishers and investors will naturally just pump money into content without the need for manufacturer funding of content (exclusives). The content problem won't be so bad by then though, as content developed right now should also be able to play on those headsets.

>>389354891
Roomscale is great, though we're kinda back to basics with how to do UIs, inventory and interaction. Lot of games have the info on your hands/arms and weapons/tools on parts of the player body. You just do stuff like you would in the real world and it's great.

On that note, even simple stuff is more involved because of it. EX. swinging and stabbing with a sword is all you instead of an animation bound to a button. It can be harder in some cases but in a good way.

Only weakness right now is locomotion. There's ways around it but we're not going to be physically walking in games until those pad things or better are a home thing.

I think they're just going about VR the wrong way. When you have all of this motion control gimmick stuff it just becomes some Wii level waggle fest, and it shows when you look at the immense garbage that does just that.
What should be done with VR at the current stage is to keep movement and body use simple, use the headset to create immersive uninterrupted experiences away from the outside world. It's no good having to constantly bring your arm up to readjust the mounting bands or trying to resync the head tracking so you don't have your neck twisted all the way around either, that just makes for a cumbersome experience and breaks the immersion altogether. Make it so the head tracking is just so you can scan left, right, up, and down on the "screen" projecting in front of you without needing to turn to the extremes.

The problem with VR is the same problem with 3D. The hype and pretend benefit is too high, and the payoff and cost to use ratio is too low.

VR promises the same thing that 3D promised and failed to deliver on, IT'LL LIKE REALLY BE IN YOUR HOME DUDE, LIKE YOULL THINK IT'S REALLY RIGHT THERE!!! WOAAAAAH

but when it comes time to make something with this technology, developers dont know what to do, they make things stick out into your face, and that trick is cool exactly once before it's annoying every time after.

The cost is so high to get into it, and theres nobody doing anything REAL with it.

Assetto Corsa with a good wheel is the best VR game.

Add in a motion simulator and you'd be right.

VR will never take off because devs have given up on the realistic looking games and now they want everything to look cartoony or dip everything in vaseline. Tell me, would you want to play League of Legends on VR? No? Congrats, there's your reason for no VR.

This pissed me off a lot. The trailer for the game starts underground and has a decent sense of scale, the characters appearing on your cockpit screen looks good, the textures and sounds aren't super special but the atmosphere in general is fine. Then the gameplay starts and it's just firing mini guns with next to no animations to the movement of the mechs.
