Although /v/ and the autists like ACfag will always argue that games in their purest form are only the gameplay present in them, even completely gameplay-oriented games always tell a story of some kind the player has varying degrees of control over.
The stories they form don't have to be the point of experiencing the game, they can be just a result of it, but almost every time they are present in some way. But especially in games that can go freely in any direction the player chooses, if the player's experience makes for a good, exciting story it often means the game itself is more enjoyable and fun to play as well.

LP's are popular because an enjoyable narration over a typical play session of something like Minecraft can contextualize the gameplay and the thinking and emotions the main character or the player goes through during the whole time.
