There comes a point where, even in a tutorial, you have to rely on the player's own intellect to figure out what to do. If I tell a player "Press Y to dash", I shouldn't have to explain that "Y" refers to a button on the controller. I shouldn't have to explain what a button is. I shouldn't have to explain what the word "dash" means.

My question is: If people are gonna jump, long jump and air dash on that screen anyway, what does adding a few steps do?

But why would there be another option when it is instructing you to jump and dash? It's literally an all white screen with black bold letters telling you what those buttons do, jump and dash.
And the tutorial does a great job negating all the other possibilities considering there aren't any. Show me someone getting over the tall block without jumping on the smaller block and air dashing over it and you might have a point there.
Giving a player the controls and then telling them to figure it out is quite literally as basic as it should be.

It's hard to argue which is better, because they teach the player differently. You can't expect the same level of understanding from someone who reads an info dump vs one who was placed in a simulated environment to use the techniques he just learned.

Manuals have never been necessary imo, for simpler games the game is simple enough to learn intuitively or with an info box as they are introduced, and for more complex games the information is usually worked into the game to ease the player into understanding its concepts. I don't think at any point you should expect players to have read information elsewhere to play the game, because it's just not going to happen with a lot of people.

You had three lives, and three buttons. If someone got Game Over without making it past the first Gomba, they were dying by doing the same thing over and over again.
-Pressing right moved you into the Goomba and killed you.
-Pressing B does nothing (no fire flower yet), holding B makes Mario run, and running into the Goomba kills you.

The first level of Super Mario is actually a pretty well designed tutorial, it introduces you to 80-90% of the game's mechanics in 2 minutes, without any button prompts or even having any words to read.
