I am about to finish yet another FPS campaign using the Steam Controller. I returned to PC gaming after a few years and had desire to use mouse + keyboard. I have a trackball.
The Steam Controller is a perfectly competent device for playing PC games. It doesn't take long to set the rotation, gyro and acceleration to suit yourself.
Criminally badly reviewed hardware IMO.
The perfect controller for not playing Half Life 3

TOO SOON™
I finished (100%) super meat boy and shovel knight on my SC using left touch pad as a dpad.
I just can't get into FPS games though, maybe when I'm forced to use it on my TV.
Its good for dark souls.

The face buttons and joystick are poorly suited to the controller form and the configuration software (i.e. Steam) is unresponsive, buggy, imprecise and not quite as fully featured as it could be which is really, really bad for a controller that demands extensive fine tweaking and getting a feel for the controller to make the most of it or to even extract a tolerable experience from a game.
I'm mostly using it for 2D platformers over anything that actually requires enough buttons to put regularly used actions on the face buttons or that makes necessary use of an analog stick.
On the positive note it has a Gyroscope, the triggers are the only perfect examples out of the major current controllers because they are both analog and have a satisfying click when you bottom them out, additional rear buttons are a must and the right touch pad is great for camera control if the game accommodates it.

cringe thread?

It costs more than an Xbox One controller. Why should I buy it?

It takes getting used to and no mainstream reviewer bothers to try.
I have one but I mainly use it as a media remote when I'm watching anime in bed on my big screen TV.
I can't seem to find a comfortable way to use it.

>It costs more than an Xbox One controller.
Its constantly on sale for $35
>Why should I buy it?
It has a better solution for mouse look than any other gamepad.
Its grip buttons and ability to be reconfigured with software are excellent.
Its not the best all around controller for all things at all times but at what its made for it is by far the best.
Just don't use it for 2D platformers.

Software is garbage.
