I actually think the yo-yo was half-decent. It's completely ridiculous and out of place but then so are the Qiao's weapons and magical flutes and harps. For what it was, it was very serviceable. The issue is more of Bao being a horrible and pointless piece of shit character. And whilst we're at it what the fuck is up with Cai Wenji? She has done nothing in the games. Xing Cai has her broship with Ping and training Shan, SSX gets included in the Sun family outings (hate how they made her a Beifag though), Zhang Chunhua acts as matriarch whilst Yi's out crushing rebellions, and Cai Wenji's just there, and most of the time she's not even there. 8XL gives her an entire fucking stage and she's not actually playable in it. Meanwhile Lady Wu, who was deeply involved in the politics of her state and one of Quan's main advisers, gets completely shafted.

The "reason" is that the combat is different and so basically every moveset needs to be remade from scratch, which is kind of an ordeal when you've got 90+ characters.

But it's still shit because the new combat looks like ass anyway. There's also not really a point in having a shitload of characters if half of them are the same as well.

I wouldn't have even minded if they gave characters similar weapons if the actual movesets were different. That's how it was in earlier DWs and I liked it better because we didn't end up with buttfuck retarded shit like boats and rocket lances and machine guns. But this is pretty obviously just clones and some of the weapons are still stupid.

Famitsu gameplay details:
There are three types of attacks: Trigger, Flow, React.


By pressing R1 and any of square, triangle, and X, you can activate a Trigger Attack to hit the enemies upwards, knock them out, or overturn them.


A Flow Attack is an attack that changes based on the enemy’s state.


R1 + square is a Trigger Attack that can then affect surrounding enemies with a Flow Attack. By pressing R1 + triangle you can hit enemies up in the air and follow up with a Flow attack that slams them back to the ground.


Think of it as using a Trigger Attack to inflict a certain condition to the enemy and then a Flow Attack as a follow up. From there you can continue using a different Trigger Attack and another Flow Attack.


You can also use a basic Flow Attack by hitting an enemy in a normal state.


The triangle button can be used as a “React” move, or a counter.


R1 + circle has varying effects depending on the character.


You can also wall jump to climb over buildings and ledges.

Yeah, like I said, no "good" reason. They spent two games bringing back and refining the charge system to undo the damage (and ignore the few positives) of 6 and the Renda system, only to throw it out in exchange for this State Combo thing which I still don't even fully understand. Everything I read about it makes it sound like it would have made far more sense as simply being a special combo string or set of moves alongside the base moveset, perhaps as a replacement to weapon switching.
Some of the later weapons did go way too far and were just ridiculous and I wouldn't have minded if a few of them were changed for new weapons or movesets as long as they used discretion in how they handled it, but they were at least all unique and original in moveset, even compared to the early DW "clones" which shared only a small amount of moves. Xiahou Ba's rocket lance was stupid and his old musous were far better than Guan Pings ever were with that sword, and it was barely like Guan Ping's old greatsword, yet he was the one who kept it and his shitty musous as well while Xiahou Ba got the dumb lance with a moveset gimmick they could have put onto another kind of weapon. Even with all the movesets made they still aren't even pulling from them and adapting them for the new system like what they did with some stuff going from 6 to 7. It just makes no sense how they try to handle this stuff at times.

We've been there before. It was called Dynasty Warriors 6 and universally agreed to be a huge mistake and the worst game in the series. That's what makes this so nuts, they screwed this up in exactly the same way in the past and then made efforts to undo it in the next games as if they had actually learned from it and were intending to move forward in a more meaningful way. Having the series go open world is a cool idea that would fit perfectly with the general flow of gameplay in the series, so it's at least making a tangible improvement compared to 6, but it should be built on top of the previous game's accomplishments and not toss everything out in a vain attempt at looking fresh. Especially since with how many mechanics they've added and dropped to the game throughout the DW series itself, let alone other games, there's plenty of little things they could have incorporated to achieve that as well.

I can't see open world benefiting DW at all. It's a series about quasi-historical battles and the mission-based structure with set maps and strategies plays into that well. Open world adds nothing. On the battle side of things it's just fucking with the flow of the story and subverting the mission/strategy-based levels by letting you just drop-in anywhere. And outside the battles? Absolutely nothing. Hunting, crafting and traversing a big empty world are the last things I want to be doing in DW.

I expect the whole thing to be broken down into about 10-15 "key" battles, and all you do is wander around the map attacking random keeps with no battle design at all, grinding up some meter which eventually allows you to tackle the story mission and progress to the next "era", where you do the same thing.

Instead of going "you can do anything" and subsequently scrubbing the battles of any actual gameplay, they should be doubling down on the mission structure and thinking of new level designs and features to make completing the missions more engaging.

Marketing the game to China was a mistake.

It'll depend on how the map is designed but I don't see how it would mess with the story, and really the objectives will still be present, just on a grander scale, and there'll likely be more room for you to take them on in a way you want to, similar to the earlier games rather than the more direct approach they've been going on which gives you much more to play with as far as personal strategy goes. It might also let you enact the historic strategies on a full scale level which would be cool. It just depends on how detailed the map itself is, and I haven't seen much but there's a bit of variety being teased with how the keeps are and the new options for tackling them. Open world doesn't have to mean remove anything that we had before though.

I dunno of DW's clones are worse than SW refusing to update the ancient SW1/2 movesets certain characters still have or not.
