Split screen was always shit

There were split screen games with online play
>>389331302
Can't be done anymore because of the graphix frying the console
Nintendo still put split-screen in their games.
>>389331302
online play became more popular
and also graphics became a bigger selling point, meaning split screen isn't viable because the console can't render the screen 2x or more because it would start running like a slideshow

Which I'm thankful for. It's dumb as fuck that developers expect people to buy multiple consoles just to play a multiplayer game with others.
Allowing two people to play the same copy of the game at the same time is Communism.
Its a mix of consoles having more and more trouble rendering the game for 2 separate players, and companies getting greedier for the money from 2 copies of the game, 2 online player subscriptions, 2 console purchases, etc etc.
Its funny how often I see people at work asking what happened to all the couch co-op games.
It works well in games like Portal 2 but in most shooters it's just annoying.
I feel that same screen multiplayer got a lot more popular than split screen
shitty consoles couldn't handle splitscreen
developers pushed for online internet play to replace LAN play/split-screen play because M$ bribed them to, so they could collect XBOX GOLD LIVE subscription fees (which proceeded to infect the next generation when Sony and Nintendo saw that Microsoft got away with it)
shitty tv show 24 made everyone despise splitscreen because it used that fucking gimmick nonstop
When games were running at 360p, nobody cares about playing at a quarter of that
Now that people have spent most of their time playing at 720p/1080p all to themselves, playing at a fourth of that is annoying.
System Link/LAN will always be superior, Split Screen can die for anything that isnt a party game.
