Real time combat isn't that much more entertaining in most cases, but it's a hell of a lot better than traditional turn based combat. Nearly all traditional RPGs are shit in terms of gameplay anyway and are boring as fuck, people only play them for the stories and big numbers autism; the few cases of great RPGs that are actually fun are the rare few exceptions because they do something interesting to break the mold and make the game actually fun to play over the many many hours you'll be dedicating to the game. Having to wait to dish out damage back and forth and back and forth against multiple random encounters over the course of anywhere between 10-60 hours just isn't fun, and the only times where it is fun are the boss fights. Hell, most RPGs probably take so long to finish partially because of how long basic combat takes due to the nature of being TBC or even RTC RPGs.

I prefer ARPGs or just having RPG stat mechanics in otherwise action/adventure games, because they actually have entertaining gameplay that doesn't become boring or a total slog within the first few hours (well, most at least). The selling point of RPGs back in the day were their - by then's standards - good and interesting stories or characters, and the gameplay was made into turn based menu managing combat because no other genre style of gameplay worked for their story telling methods. Only after years of improvements, innovations, and experimenting did RPGs actually get moderately fun or complex gameplay, and the few shining examples of amazing RPGs are the ones with actually good combat systems. I'm sure someone will bring up Chrono Trigger in defense of all RPGs ever, because it's one of those few shining examples of RPG gameplay done right.

Tl;dr - Most traditional RPGs have boring gameplay and are a relic of necessity of the early years of video games.
