I have played the pre-alpha, the alpha, and the beta. The core platforming is unpolished from a lack of defined physics to your movements which is made all the more noticeable by subpar level structure. You have a floaty jump that somehow lets you make a full jump going forwards and then pull back on the control stick to behind the spot you jumped from. You also have a mid-air jump that has the exact same qualities as the standard one which leads to extremely abusive traversal. The grappling hook has no weight as you get pulled around. Your umbrella attacks likewise don't have any weight behind them, you're simply waggling a stick in front of you or in a circle and you can rapidly hit enemies without worry. The worst part though is that there is no drop shadow constantly below you.

I played the level in the Alpha and Beta builds. The only differences between the two were graphics and some voice lines. It's underwhelming to actually play through it because the level itself is extremely short and the second half devolved into an endless ring around the rosie by making you flip through a bunch of adjacent rooms to flip some switches. Aside from a scripted event that happens on the first floor, you can just run through the entire level without worrying about evading her at all whatsoever.

I'm going to focus solely on the beta here because it's the most complete of the builds as well as the one you receive for pre-ordering the game post-kickstarter so it's treated as a demo of sorts.

As soon as you get to the first world you can already see what's wrong. This was back when the game was being touted as a sandbox style collectathon so it was designed as a big space that you can run around, explore the various locations, and progress at your leisure. As far as the layout goes, it's a complete mess. You run down the road and there's no sense of direction for you to follow, elements are simply vomited out and you have to pick out the contents which vaguely resemble what you want to see. A big issue this stems from is the spacing, you have such a high degree of movement options (because nothing in your repertoire is balanced) yet the walkways are narrow and walls and roofs so are cramped into one another , that it makes walking on the roads completely useless. You have to be either really lucky or have played the game before to even figure out where you need to go to get that first hourglass, because the game doesn't provide any guidance in its design whatsoever.
Now all of that I said just now was actually addressed by the developer when he rolled out the Beta. How did he do it? Every other main hourglass other than the first one drops the sandbox entirely. Instead of continuing with the N64 era freestyle progression you are now stuck on smaller, linear sections of the worlds as if you were playing Mario Galaxy 1. A later hourglass set in the first world you're just in some restaurant where there's little to nothing to explore, every inch of the ground you tread is mandatory to go forward.

Real quick just so you guys know I'm not shitting around here, here's a screencap. That 13% completion is based on what the final game is expected to have, not the content solely in the beta, yet that's still a big enough chunk for my words to have validation behind them. I'm not "trolling" as the millenials use the term nowadays and I'm certainly not just being negative for the sake of looking down on the game. I gave my money to this 5 years ago thinking it'll be worth it. Now I'm here 5 years later recounting my experience for the umpteenth time on /v/, and I still have a glimmer of hope that the game does in fact turn out okay in the end. But with the way I'm seeing it now, especially by how the game's latest trailer doesn't show any signs of the problems being addressed all these years later, I just don't know anymore.
