>What's this shit
DICE made a cartoony WWII third-person Battlefield game that went into open beta in 2009, bumped into an outrage later that year, and officially died in 2015.
The Revive Network, who brought back BF2 and 2142, is now working on bringing back BFH and everything is free this time. There's currently NA, SA, EU, and AU servers.
>What version is the game
Due to the server files being from mid-2011, the game is at the time where anti-vehicle weapons and shit like pirate pistols, dragon cancer, laser guns, the workshop, helicopters, bees etc went into the mix. It still has BC2, MOH, and DS2-themed cosmetics and reskinned weapons, but otherwise this is coincidentally likely the best build you'll get without entering the weapon power creep that happened in the game's twilight years.
>But what's the catch
As of now, you have to link a Revive Network account to aDiscordone, then find the installer and dev website links through pinned messages on their server and also the link to create your characters. Bear in mind some character/level wipes are to be expected.
>What's missing
-No one has access to widgets, so nobody can sustain themselves with bandages or vehicles with wrenches and so people rely on Combat Medicine for healing.
-On the other hand, there's no tonic cancer.
-Nobody can respec abilities yet.
-Server bookmarks don't work, but there's a server list you can use to manipulate the matchmaking 'Play Now!' button.
Apart from that, all cosmetics and weapons are unlocked for everyone, including permanent XP boost.
>What's the current meta
Using at least one long-range equivalent for a weapon types, pistols and shotguns especially, because people are afraid to die and so will try to camp and plink off people safely whenever possible. The overall low aggression is likely due to low level heroes as well.
Didn't see anyone talk about this, but if anyone here liked the game at one point, there's another opportunity to play it.

Those guys also revived BF2 and 2142 when EA shut their servers down, I think they're pretty trustworthy. They even warn that other forks of BFH revivals are much less secure.

I think the game still had a decent amount of life in it even after 2009, though you still had to spend like $5-10 for some permanent weapons so it wasn't really F2P. The workshop was probably what truly broke the game though, it became bullshit ever since by being even more P2W than before with that and more crazier new stuff since.

I only bothered with Australian servers, but news of them got around some former regulars quite quickly and I had a good few games. I'd imagine you'll find more active ones overseas, especially in central Europe.

So basically, get an account there all sorted out, never tried it but you probably have to bother with Discord to download what's in pic related, just look at the pinned messages for this same post on the #bfheroes-chat channel in the case you need one. On the other hand, there's also a channel for any news on further work put into the game as well.
I might make a mirror download but I'm not sure if that'll do anything or save time, see if this works without one first.

My guess is that they didn't find it profitable to host older games or at least worth whatever it was to host their master servers. That and these projects practically shift the maintenance over to volunteers instead. Heroes and P4F are probably a similar case, just shifting resources over to somewhere else by the time they milked the more loyal part of their userbase for what they were worth and probably being something of a social experiment.
