Mostly because of a purposefully misleading hate campaign spearheaded right here on /v/ wayyyy back when the game didn't have a finished engine nor any assets. Someone posted the lumberjack doodle they used for their first engine testing and spammed it and 3.3 until it became a meme. Just look at this retard >>389322221
The fact that Broken Age also wound up sucking ass just cemented the work it did, so now Double Fine are worse than Hitler and so is Tim Schafer.

So how many gamergators DOES it take to screw in that lightbulb?

I don't care about Kickstarter shit, because almost all of the ludicrous Kickstarter campaigns usually churn out a shit game anyways. I'm almost finished with the second act of broken age, and so far I'd give it an 8/10

Most of Neo/v/ may not believe this, but Double Fine used to be one of a handful of devs /v/ almost unanimously approved of and liked. /v/ thought they could do no wrong.

It didn't all change until the aftermath of the Broken Age kickstarter thing.

Jack black in an openworld heavy metal themed adventure game where a humble roady saves the world!

...except you can't jump... even though the terrain is wavy and interesting and begging to be explored.
...because most of the controls are focused on this bizarre battalion wars style strategy game.

The entire development was a fucking trainwreck and he burned a ton of bridges with publishers because they kept telling him how lousy those RTS mechanics meshed with the rest of the game.

>>389322873
I gave you the quick rundown, and all the proof I need has already been regurgitated in this very thread. There was never any substance whatsoever to the hate, no concrete reasons, just a lot of hyperbole and melodrama. Also gamergate happened and Double Fine/Tim Schafer took an oppositional stance to them which, of course, made them patently unacceptable. Basically, there was a long period where they didn't do anything that made them look "good", mostly because Broken Age turned out poorly and took an extremely long time to release, which automatically pseudo-justified all the baseless hate the company had received.

>>389322907
He burned bridges with exactly one publisher, Activision, which is not a bad thing because they fuck over every dev they work with eventually, and EA just took note that the game sold poorly so that's that. I don't blame them for trying to make something different, but I do blame them for making it not fun.

>>
>>389323713
>>389323729
See most of the shit he's got here in this post happened after Double Fine was already a pariah, with a lot of it specifically worded to look worse than the reality, like the engine shit and the voice acting. The voice acting wasn't expensive at all because they drew from people they were friends with, and the engine didn't hold production up at all, the main roadblock was boundless bloat that literally doubled the game, without actually making it cost any more to backers. At no point did he demand more money from anyone, and no one who backed it was denied the full copy. The game was sold on early access with the entire first half of the game, and everyone here pretended to be triggered to hell and back by this.

Fact is, people love controversy, and they love to hate, and the late release coupled with the lack of public news on the project (backers received frequent updates, and they would post frequently on their own forums too) meant that they were an easy target.
>>
I hate them for what they did with Massive Chalice. The idea was good, the funding was there, the execution showed that the team was likely mismanaged. They had the core concepts down pat, and that's it. Everything else was shallow as hell.

Don't even get me started on Spacebase DF-9. I didn't buy into that one and it still gets under my skin.

They literally did like three or four rounds of fundraising for Broken Age and delivered it like three fucking years late, and when it finally was delivered it was a piece of shit.

The early access thing I'm talking about was a separate issue but serves as the go-to example for why you should never give them your money ever again for any fucking reason.

What platforms did they use for this fundraising, because I don't remember them doing that. They put the first half on early acccess, like I said, and I think they secured some outside funding but honestly I don't remember because I never gave that much of a shit as long as they eventually were going to release the game without me paying more for it, which they did.
>>
>They literally have an ownership in a crowd-funding site called FIG (which is a term that means swindling in Britbong)
>That they also use to fund their game(s)
>Let you "invest" (give up your bonus goodies that you probably won't receive anyway, people are STILL waiting on some Broken Age backer gifts), which effectively means you are giving them money for nothing and they give you a pitiably small amount, scales with quantity invested, for each sale the game has and the game would have to sell better than Overwatch for you to actually turn a profit off it
>At the time of launching their Psychonauts 2 campaign, this method wasn't even legal in the States, the legal body who guides their choices, and "Investors" weren't and still aren't required to pay a cent, literally anyone could make a fake Investment and would not be held liable for it, but it still counted towards their "We funded the game!" total
>At the time, unlicensed people weren't allowed to invest in companies in any form in this manner
>After like 9 months of legislation, the bill passed and Doublefine sent out their requests for the promised funds from the Investors + paperwork
>We don't even know how much they actually got from that scam and probably never will

>Why do people hate then again?
Here's one reason.
The best part of this? The game went on sale right before they abandoned it. It was a fucking scam, through and through.
>>
>>389325242
Looking back now it seems that all the hot-take articles on it at the time were incorrect, technically, because they didn't ask for more money, but they did put it on Steam early access and they did seek funding from private sources as well. Regardless, that's a matter of perception, not why people really hate them.

People hate them because of all the broken promises. Broken Age was a shitty game. Terrible writing that doesn't seem to understand its own themes, lazy puzzle designs in general, and a boring plot that doesn't ever actually pick a direction and stick with it. On top of that it was released piecemeal years after it was promised to be released, and all the while they were very publicly running fundraising campaigns for multiple other projects and setting up their own fundraising platform, Fig, which has some seriously shady bullshit going on in it on top of taking advantage of morons who think that their $1000 donation is an "investment" when it's highly unlikely Psychonauts 2 will more than break even.

More to the point, though, it baffles me that anyone would defend or willingly be a customer of Double Fine after the bullshit they pulled with Spacebase DF-9. They canceled it, but claimed it was "finished" despite being nowhere near feature-complete according to their pitch, and continued to take payments for the game well after they had decided to just fucking drop it but hadn't actually announced their decision yet. I don't care how you look at it, that's downright duplicitous.

They haven't actually released a good game in years, to boot. Psychonauts was their last decent game. Brutal Legend was a fucking mess of poor ideas and wasted potential and I'm still pissed it fell so far short of what it could have been. They gather the clout necessary to make a video game that's a love letter to classic heavy metal, and they make it into a fucking RTS? The fuck were they thinking?
>>
>>389325680
It wasn't a scam, but they were entirely unrealistic in their approach. They thought they could fund future development purely on sales, for some stupid fucking reason. That's why they put it on sale, it was a pathetic, last-ditch attempt to make enough to keep it going.

Don't assume malice when incompetence is more likely.
>>
>>389325680
Speaking of Developers who put their games on sale just before abandoning them,
>Uber Entertainment
>Planetary Annihilation
>As Alpha rolls on and moves into Beta, they begin to listen less and less to their community on changes and fixes and improvements
>Break a promise that the game would not go on sale anywhere until release
>25% off in a Steam Christmas Sale
>75% off at release
>Same day they release the game (half finished as per their original goal sheets, but with oddly good game balance, not perfect, but good), they release a Kickstarter for ANOTHER RTS game
>It crashes and fails hard
>They crawl back and finish up the game after a month of nothing so much as a "Hey fuck you" to the community on PA
>Manage to fuck up balance more and more and make Ground units the only viable type while Air and Water are both shit unit types, community had no say in this, they just Nerfed shit they didn't like
>>
>>389325959
If they're so fucking incompetent then why are you defending them so hard?
>>
>>389322172
>begs for kickstarter money
>blows it all with barely anything to show for it
>asks for money again
>blows it all, again
>only has enough to make half the game, says he'll release the second half if the first one sells enough
>goes on to start his own crowdfunding scam website where people "invest" in games and get a return but buried in all the legal shit is a bunch of stuff saying how they're not actually obligated to pay you a dime
and through all of this tim tam acts like a massive cunt posting pictures of him waving money around.
>>
>>389325917
Fig happened so long after the fact that you shouldn't really bring it up, and they had multiple teams and an entire company to keep running, why wouldn't they want other projects going? Why should they kill their company and fire everyone not working on Broken Age just to assuage the nerd rage of a bunch of people on 4chan?

Also, they had to claim DF-9 was "finished" because that's how early access works. It didn't have all the planned features, not by a long shot, but it was still technically a "complete" game, it was just really shitty and low on content. Also, like I said in a prior post, Double Fine was a pariah long before DF-9 had ever entered development.

And what were they thinking with the stupid RTS? Different factions of metal fighting each other. They could've, and should've, gone Dynasty Warriors with it, but they didn't, and the rest is history.
>>
>>389326068
I'm not sure how you think me calling them idiots is defending them. They've been fucking up for years at this point but that doesn't make them evil or deserving of scorn, just don't buy their shitty games. Not sure why everything has to be so dramatic.
>>
>>389326412
Christ, Tim, this is why people hate you, defending your company on /v/ instead of making vidya.

The question was "why do people hate them again" and I provided valid answers. They make shit games and do shady shit and they've broken so many promises that it's baffling that anyone takes them seriously anymore.
