Rescue Team is the best for isekai self-insert autism fuel but as a game it's just okay. Explorers is the best overall title but it doesn't really excel anywhere. Gates has good story but shit gameplay and almost all of its neat experimental ideas are underused and don't show up again, not really worth playing. Super has great core gameplay but the structure of missions and party members is hot garbage.

I'm playing through White 2 for the first time ever right now, and the region is huge and expansive and has lots of cool stuff, but it is driving me fucking absolutely insane how much they force you on a linear path through the region with arbitrary horseshit.

There's actually some place where they block off a route by just having random dancing people who say, "Haha we're just randomly dancing who knows when we'll disappear?" and then you've got to follow their narrative shit and they block off every other pathway to railroad you around the region. Also not much for grinding Pokemon.

Also you can't trade Pokemon from your Gen4 games at all, and then you can't transfer them until like the post-game when I wanted to have some silly starter like Porygon or something for the region.

I didn't hate Sun and Moon as much as other people but man, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon looks like it's going to be absolute garbage.

Last time the series was truly exceptional was Gen 5.

The 3DS has some good stuff, but I wouldn't buy one just for Pokemon especially since most have found its entries lackluster. At most wait for USUM to come out since it will at the very least be the most up to date in core mechanics, and if you can find a good number of other 3DS games you want, go for it.

If you're going to buy it anyways and this is just you looking for validation, I would go for XY or ORAS. XY is pretty mediocre but it's at least the only instance of its region and honestly it's got my favorite atmosphere outside of GSC, ORAS if you ask me is a sidegrade to Emerald that gets some shit wrong but also gets some shit right. There's pretty much no reason to play SM with USUM on the horizon.

The 3D effect is shit in XY/ORAS, and it's plain not there in SM. If you're going to emulate them SM mostly runs fine but XY is completely broken and ORAS I hear has some problems with the graphics and a crash deal on the credits but honestly ORAS is more enjoyable if you just stop playing at the credits and do all the side content before the E4.

It makes some nice additions and changes, like expanding Scorched Slab into a proper dungeon, making the Contest stat system slightly less retarded, story changes prior to the credits, online Secret Bases, more robust underwater routes, some nice details added to the region in general, DexNav, and all the mechanical and communication improvements that come with being in a newer generation. But some areas like the New Mauville dungeon and Trick House are cut down, the updated Trainer teams and new Double Battles from Emerald are missing, the Battle Frontier was cut, Game Corner is gone, and some features are gone in the name of QoL like Berry Blending and the Safari Game part of the Safari Zone.

I like Sinnoh more than BW Unova--B2W2's new and updated locations have a lot more character to them--but yeah I don't get the love some have for Sinnoh's music. It's always been easily the least memorable Pokemon soundtrack for me, when I found out they had different tracks for day and night years after I had played both DP and Platinum multiple times I had no clue what anyone was talking about besides the Pokemon Center. I even replayed Platinum recently and still didn't notice them.

The battle themes are the worst about it. Only VS Arceus is memorable in any way, and unless you cheated, you'd never hear it.

Gen IV's are almost decent because its Baby Pokemon actually appear in the wild and somewhat fulfill the intended gameplay purpose of letting you get what are normally later game Pokemon lines earlier, unlike Gen II's or Gen III's which are mostly of Pokemon who already are early route material and otherwise can all only be gotten through breeding anyways. The exceptions are Tyrogue and Togepi in GSC and Wynaut in RSE, which are all gift only. Of course, you have Mantyke showing up much later than Mantine would anyways in a Johto run, so they still fucked up. Platinum doesn't give you a Happiny Egg anymore either, so one more for the "have to breed for it" pile, and Riolu just existed to have a cute version of their hot new marketing boy.

I always feel like B/W's postgame is constantly forgotten about. You explore routes that were previously blocked off and trainers are actually scaled to and above the level you should be at after beating the champ. There were sections that I found actually challenging in there. On top of things like Cynthia showing up, or Black City It's not nothing, but I always see it get treated like it doesn't exist.

BW is more of a shakeup because only 156 brand new Pokemon were available for the main adventure, and it marks a point the series started pushing for heavier narratives.

B2W2 is more standard, but with more polish, a well expanded and updated region with a lot more character to it, over 300 Pokemon new and old throughout the main game, and a ton of little things to do all throughout the region be it daily or just stuff hidden in nooks and crannies. It's missing the sort of quality, meaty time sink additions Emerald and Platinum had in their Frontiers, and the main adventure remains very linear for the sake of the heavier narrative, but if you like just fucking around the game world it's probably best for that.

Personally I would swap XY with SM, and bring down FRLG.

I feel like I enjoyed SM more than a lot of people on /v/. I got 250 hours out of it (pretty weak considering I had 700 hours on Y and 1100 on Black 2, to be fair) and I feel like it was one of the stronger gen launches for Pokemon. I'm really hoping USUM pulls a BW2 and fixes everything, because it could be one of the best Pokemon games if they address what needs to be worked on.

The thing is, its just pretty lackluster being in the middle of Platinum/HGSS and BW2. On the one hand you have the Battle Frontiers and shitloads of events and stuff to do, and on the other hand you have basically an improved, expanded version of the region with extras like PWT and Pokestar Studios.

I enjoy BW1 quite a bit and like the postgame, but it gets looked over just because its between some of the most packed postgames in the series.
