Make a proper fucking sequel to Riders or The Secret Rings. Sonic games should be about moving fast and traversing areas that supplement speed and reward reaction. Platforming Sonic games are shit. The only good platforming Sonic games are Sonic Advance 2&3 because you didn't automatically fucking die for going right too fast and you could play characters better built for side-scrolling because Sonic himself is a shit character for side scrolling games.

Step 1: Make a 3D implementation of the classic physics engine and game mechanics.
Step 2: No more scripted spectacle events or homing attack.
Step 3: Keep boost, but make it burn 20 rings per use and can't be held down, and make it so sonic gets hurt from enemies even while boosting, however allow the speed gained to be permanent for as long as players avoid obstacles. Bad players will avoid using it so they can get one ups, while players that master the game can use it more liberally without it being broken. This design will have to be refined, but basically, if players aren't using it, its too weak; if players use it instead of spin dash all the time, its overpowered. I want players using it like bombs in Touhou instead of being what the game is designed around.
Step 4: Drop all alternate gameplay styles. No werehog, no classic sonic, no 2D sections.Other playable characters are fine if they play similarly like in the genesis or advance games.
Step 5: Design levels that twist and turn back through itself, but with different tracks layered on top of each other. Twinkle Park is a good example of what I am talking about, with its different paths with many interesting ways to swap between them, in an organic way using the mechanics, instead of the canned paths from the boost games. Have pacing between horizontal speedy bits and more vertical action/platforming bits like the classic games. Its fine for some stages to be more linear than others in order to differentiate them better, but the typical stage should let you clip corners, skip sections, and path switch much more than most modern sonic games do.
Step 6: Create aesthetics and narrative that brings back the series original theme of nature vs machines which has gotten lost over the years.
Step 7: Clone Michael Jackson and have a Jun Senoe/Michael Jackson/Tee Lopes/Tomoya Ohtani collab soundtrack.

As soon as they hooked into the "gotta go fast" race track levels of sonic adventure, it was all over for sonic 3d. That sort of game play is just too shallow and limited to be interesting or be able to evolve new gameplay elements like mario has been able to and you can't retcon it all and go for a proper 3d platformer, since sonic is now about going fast and nothing else.

Its a dead end that needs to be allowed to die.

Mario Maker has proven this. People can't make good levels. Pretty much all of the levels you encounter in Mario Maker are badly designed, just gimmick levels, troll levels, and "LOL SO DIFFICULT!" levels. They completely lose touch with what is actually FUN about levels in Mario games.

make it sonic adventure 2 sonic/ shadow control but fix it so that it doesn't tie every other action than jump to the B button

branch out the path of each level to at least an efficient route and a route that's more explorative, that intersect with each other pretty frequently and can hide multiple objectives on

make characters other than sonic/shadow capable of beating these levels, there's nothing wrong with them, but introducing them so that they suck to control is what kills it

make bosses at least on par with the egg dragoon from the end of adventure 1

chao garden for longer dedication because there's only so much you can get out of a sonic game

I think that this would at least be a good step in the right direction

More Utopia than Adventure 2, but definitely pull from both, and rework the parkour system from Lost World into something more simple and fluid, to get the most out of complex 3D level design.

I liked the backstory idea of "Eggman" being a brand, a beloved icon, people enjoy the jolly fat man's cute inventions and wonderful places his industries are behind, and that makes him very rich. He uses these funds to go to more dangerous inventions and work toward insidious goals of making a "utopia" for humans by wiping out all nature.
Headcanon aside, Eggman doesn't really need a backstory to look into, what's important are his actions and how they hurt the Earth.

I always assumed he made them to be used by humans, but it's best to leave the reason WHY Eggman is making these places ambigious. But not all locations are Eggman constructs, some are natural environments or beautiful ancient ruins that Eggman is in the process of destorying.

Of course, Sonic's original animal friends are very important characters. However I don't think there's any reason to undo what has happened in Sonic 1 - & Knuckles.

The first game can do that. Do what the classics and Mania do, making Tails and Knuckles optional characters with minor alterations to the game's events to accommodate them, and alter level design and bosses for both of them. Getting classic style Tails and Knuckles to work in 3D would be a great effort, and is worth including in the game.

Shadow is the best rendition of the Adventure 2 physics, period. What hurts the game (other than the writing and presentation, which is actually a lot goofier and Sonic standard outside of the bits everyone memes to death) is the level design, which varies wildly from serviceable to disgusting. This is because they tried to cram 2-3 objectives into each mission.

Sonic 2006 is also conceptually a very god game, but was rushed to huge degrees to meet its Christmas 06 deadline - while the game only reached tech demo levels in MAY 2006. Also, several teams split off from Sonic 2006 to work on spinoffs because SEGA's pressure was overbearing.

The only truly bad, unsalvageable Sonic game is Boom.

Bull. Shit. It's Heroes (which was gimped SA2 gameplay) but worse. And no, I played the Gamecube versions, it's shit. But the rest of your post is correct.

Shadow is shit because it had no reason to exist. A: They spent more time on that game instead of 06 at the time (which was retarded) and B: Because they should have left that fucker dead in SA2 or not bringing up any "muh amnesia/ backstory" that should have just been handled in SA2 in the first place (which was clearly not planned as Shadow was meant to stay dead but fans got triggered.)

06 was going to be shit solely because it had the flaws of Dark Era Sonic; TOO serious. It's a fucking game with animals, you can't make cartoons serious, it's retarded. Look at Kingdom Hearts for fuck sake. The story wasn't going to make the game fun, the story was the ONLY thing they focused on, rather than making a video game first.

Now, to answer OP, just make S3K in 3D. Proper physics, proper character gameplays (Sonic core gameplay, skins + unique ability = other characters, etc). Hell Mania 3D now, basically. Story should be gameplay integrated, not centered around like 3D Sonic games did.
