Velvet is the worst thing to happen to this series.

Honestly, Berseria is probably my least favorite Tales game. Some of the characters were pretty annoying, and it lacked that great sense of adventure that Zestiria and Symphonia had. Also one of the worst battle systems in the whole series.
Xillia 2 > All the rest

Her game was okay but needed better level design, music, and combat.

I couldn't finish Berseria despite finishing Zestiria and hating it.

I fucking hate velvet. Sure, interesting character and whatnot, but she does everything on her own terms.

She's a fucking stuck up bitch in the game and through a lot of her monologue about "the virtues of living by one's own principles" (in which she would disregard logic just to fuck some shit up for) I wished she would die with all my heart.

But i guess her ending up in an undying prison is just as good, if not better than death itself. Fuck you, Velvet.

Berseria was my first Tales game and I loved it. I'm trying Zestiria but not really feeling it as much. Should I give some of the older games a spin?

Okay so we all like to talk about which game had the best or most developed cast, but have we ever talked about which Tales party was the most fun?

I don't necessarily mean in gameplay, I mean in skits and character interactions. My vote goes to Hearts R.

Zesty is pretty shitty. Nostalgiafags will recommend you Symphonia and Abyss but they're mediocre at best and haven't aged well at all. Stories are good though if you care a lot about that sort of thing. Abyss' cast is pretty polarizing though.

Vesperia is probably the most well-rounded in terms of story, gameplay, and characters. Not the best game ever but it's solid. Graces f has the most FUN combat and character interactions but the story is shit and and most of the characters are annoying on their own.

Xillia and Xillia 2 are pretty good, with 2 being better, but you won't understand shit if you don't play the first one. Combat's okay but the link system grows tiresome after a while and its outright cumbersome if you're playing with more than one person.

I would recommend playing the PSX version of Phantasia- it's where the franchise started and it's good if you can tolerate mid-90's JRPG conventions. Destiny: Director's Cut is worth it if you can understand moon.

Since Berseria was "cursed" by Zestiria's flop, I'm starting to wonder if the next mainline game will be localized.

Tales casts usually boil down to the same basic structure. You have like half the cast comprised of dumb teenagers, one dad figure, one little kid, and maybe one animal or something. Even subtlety fails to make them interesting after a while. Combine that with the usual uninteresting story that keeps the casts afloat and the fun factor degrades with the number of games you play - usually.
