You're a rebel band trying to take the land back from the evil empire but if you get too overwhelmingly powerful and basically slaughter them you get put on the path of basically beginning your own empire and your reputation plummets, the people don't want the same thing all over again. Don't rule through power.

You have to keep this in mind, it's also important to figure out how to manage your units. If you have a group of evil characters do not pair them with holy characters so it doesn't fuck with their alignment or their charisma. Also use evil units as guards for cities but only liberate cities with holy units.

I only played CS+ so I'm not sure if they only added hints in that version but it seemed feasible to find the ending on your own. The main hard part is the initial step of not grabbing the Booster 0.8 despite the huge prompt by the game to do so when the professor drops down from the sky. You only find out you shouldn't've done that if you examine a bookshelf next to the final boss arena. Once you do that, however, it's not that hard to understand when you made the wrong move, like if you take the wrong path in Waterway and don't reach the cabin you're told up front that Curly died before you hit the next save point, prompting a smart player to reload. I suppose it might be unintuitive to backtrack to the mushroom boss later on but you can at least do that at any time before entering Last Cave (and might be able to do it after entering, I'm not sure since there are two different Last Cave designs based on the ending you're aiming for).

The thing is, without a guide, 99% of people could never even know of a true ending.
It's obvious Pixel made it for the 1% who has to try everything. 99% of players will grab the jet-pack, even on a second play-through as it's too useful. The 1% will say "I think I can make this jump without the booster, I wonder what happens if I make it?"
From there it's simple experimentation.
