DayZ mod.

1. Great atmosphere, music really sells the spooky atmosphere.
2. Really nails the nihilistic aspect of the zombie horror genre, because there's no end game, and ultimately you will die to something. You can't win, you can only postpone losing.
3. The game is laissez faire about how players interact and deal with the game, unlike a traditional game or game logic that'd try to force players to interact in very controlled manners which leads to a huge variety of interesting interactions between players.

Some of this stuff applies to standalone, some of it has fallen off over time, but for the first few years, DayZ was the best and still full of potential, and frankly, I still think is the best zombie game ever made.

DayZ is garbage, and its 'player interaction' is particularly garbage. Huge variety of interesting reactions? Get real you dumb nigger. These types of games bring out the absolute worst in people, and there are only two reactions you will get in DayZ: Either they immediately attack each other, or one of the runs off since they don't think they can kill him.
