Console producers take a cut of games that are sold for them. Microsoft gets a cut of every game sold for Xbox, Sony from Playstation games and Nintendo from Switch games.

THATS why everyone gives a shit for exclusives. Not only do they help give purpose for why to buy one console over another (More true in past generations than now since the Switch has disruptive changes rather than competing in the same value network) but also because they tend to be a big source of revenue for the console producer themselves.

If I like Nintendo a ton and want them to do well, I want tons of good exclusives on Switch because if they aren't exclusive for Nintendo, it's more likely people won't see a traditional benefit for getting the Switch over a Playstation AND the cut Nintendo gets from that title will be less than if it were an exclusive.

Part of it is also a sort of on-going economic trend which is that third party titles doing well on hardware with unusual or disruptive technology, then that signals to other third party developers that the Switch has potential for profit.

Well I mostly don't want Xbox to succeed. Why? Because they produce almost no exclusives worth any salt.

Nintendo directly produces games and a big way they produce games is based on what their developers want to make. That might sound obvious but the issue is that if you look at Sega after they dropped out of the console market, their entire approach to making software changed sort of significantly because that's all they had now.

The only game console company I would not cry over dropping out of the market is Xbox and Microsoft for two reasons: first, Microsoft could just start asking for a slight cut of PC games sold on their OS, so it wouldn't be a big financial hit. But also it would not be a big loss in terms of games made: they have basically no exclusives and don't produce any games themselves. It would not be entirely difficult for Xbox-centric developers to jump to PS4
