You can nowadays find sub-600$ laptops with discrete graphics cards, that can run even Witcher 3 at 1080p.

forgot to mention that a lot of the gayman laptops have a mini display port now. when I hit up a LAN party I bring along my 27'' IPS screen. so you can get your 144hz/1440p no problem. It's not going to work on newer games but my gtx 980m is maxing out rocket league

cell phones literally replaced laptops years ago

for everything else you can just build a micro pc
