Why are all stealth franchises dead?
>>
You just can't see em.
>>
>>389266168
Hitman is still alive, no?
>>
No one is taking a chance on anything anymore. All games have become streamlined and we're just waiting for another crash to bring back good games again. EA murdered half of the good franchises and the other studios are only afloat because of drones from their respective consoles. You might even find a few ITT defending the most recent trash released.

Sorry, friend.
Stealth games aren't a genre anymore. They've been reduced to an optional gameplay mechanic in crappy action games. That shows what the industry thinks of stealth games.

You're talking about pure old fashioned stealth gameplay? It isn't popular anymore because it's too slow, methodical, and unforgiving for anyone that isn't looking for it or used to it. Publishers probably want to retrofit the old stealth genre for the current mass market judging from the resurrected franchises I've seen, but I don't think it's working. For now, you just have to live with forced stealth levels in action games, barely-immersive RPG skills, and optional mechanics in today's "stealth" games.

The fluidity of action controls really makes it pointless to stealth. We are at a point where a game will be slammed universally if it deviates from the modern control scheme

Because they are missing some of the magic of the original two thief games.
Sprawling levels
Plenty of routes to choose from
Promoting stealth rather than just letting players kick in the door and spray bullets everywhere
A protagonist who is actually likable and not just a brooding archetype and has an actual deep character to them
A protagonist whose voice doesn't have so much gravel that it sounds like they could pave your driveway through speaking alone

I think it has to do with the unimaginative way these games have been handled in the past years. It goes back to almost all of these games not being able to bring anything new to the table, really. They have had always the same controls, core-mechanics and same way of giving the player variety. There are modern stealth games that are not worse than the classics but they still utilise the same general framework. It would need really innovative ideas to get people interested again.
>>
They can't make them proper open world games with copy pasted content. They actually need proper level design and good ai.
>>
>>389270198

It was, had its heart in the right place too.
Wasn't *good* though.

>>389270872

Add to that the death of systemic gameplay and love of experimentation.
Thi4f was an edge case in how bad it was, but I think it infected most any modern game to a point.

It's hard to make game for a certain now niche profile of players in the generation of game as spectacle, where so many people won't even play a game before looking at a video of someone doing what needs be done. And yet don't want to have to read a game manual to learn basic verbs.

This generation is full of brainlets who lack the attention span and patience to play a stealth game without getting bored/frustrated and quitting. It's not just in gaming, it's all forms of media. The consumer is getting more impatient by the year and you could argue technology is the cause of it. Having information for anything in mere seconds makes the brain run on auto pilot
>>
>>389274653
Waiting for the enemy movement patterns and then eliminating them with one button press without them having a chance to fight back doesnt sound that intelligent to me. If the game gives me a choice between stealth and shooting I just go always shooting. Why the hell would I essentially SKIP GAMEPLAY by hiding and not using my tools, health and other resources to fight enemies that actually fight back?
>>
>>389275186
You sound like the kind of guy that has only played stealth/action games and not stealth games.
>>
They're niche. I mean there's still like 1 to 4 million of people willing to buy big name stealth games, but the thing is that publishers want way more than that.
Blacklist sold 2 millions in a month, yet it underperformed in sales.
Can't know exact numbers for Hitman TM, but we know it wasn't enough to get Square Enix to run the series. Though SE is universally known for overblown estimations.
With reasonable budget publishers could continue on making "small" profit from stealth games, but they want ten million sales. But they could also invest into something new, that becomes a big hit.

There's still hope for Hitman Season 2 and hopefully Konami continues on making proper MGS after Survive. Also Ubisoft teased new Splinter Cell happening on E3.
>>
>>389275760

>>
>>389276107

The classic stealth games that most of us here can agree are great like thief, hitman or the original splinter cell games are too niche and hardcore for a younger generation with a much shorter attention span, this leads to developers streamlining the classic IPs to gain a greater market share. That in turn alienates the original fanbase and just results in the games being generic messes that can be overlooked due to other games having as deep stealth mechanics but better shooting mechanics for example. Why play the latest splinter cell for example when fallout 4 has just as good stealth these days?

Games are just getting shittier and shittier, it just pisses me off so goddamn much.

this. All major and somewhat established publishers don't risk it. With mainstream vidya on it's decline, they just want to safely make a quick buck.

Once more independent game devs start getting more proficient, we might see some decent stealth games once 3d indie games become more common.
>>
>>389267707
more like no one cares about going for specific audiences, or it's not allowed anymore internally, and have to make things for general audiences
>>
>>389270675
I was very disappointed by MGSV, but fuck if it wasn't one of the best handling games I've ever played. Never seen a game that combined nearly perfect stealth controls with action controls as good as anything on the market. TPP really perfected what GZ started.

Of all the things that should make a stealth game difficult, controls shouldn't be one of them.

Try emulating xbox or ps2 version of DA, it's much better. PC version is buggy and probably won't run on a modern pc without some fan-made fixes. Next-gen version was made by a different team and it shows. Ps2 and xbox version is basically Chaos Theory with a few new features. I loved it.

>Why are all stealth franchises dead?

Casual fucking shits and a general lack of interest in the genre. Styx is the only one that stands out.
>>
>>389274653
Yeah, it generation thing too. But lately these games have so much free space that it becomes boring to play.
In old days we had small maps with carefully placed enemies and they're behavior. It becomes a puzzle. But in late games it became too primitive.
>>
>>389283149
For me it wasn't too hard cause I had those overpowered SC weapons. Completely broke the games balance by being better than all the other weapons in the game. Hard part was my mates doing dumb shit like shooting out the lights too quickly and setting off the alarms, or throwing the wrong grenades somehow.

It was tricky, because you had to throw smoke nades in specific spots when chasing Shetland during the conflict, also there's the duct that leads into that one lobby firefight which u gotta time or else one of the soldiers will spot you even tho he is busy shooting one of shetland's mercs. There's also the part where you are eavesdropping on Shetland's meeting. one of his guards will see you so you gotta back out, out of view. The worst part was the boiler room part which was pretty random and it took me a few tries to get it right.
>>
>>389286256

MGS didn't used to be this way, but the introduction of the tranq gun changed it. Guard placement got a lot more careless and some parts of the later games had parts that were nearly impossible to ghost without memorizing patrol routes.
>>
>>389285584
I really enjoyed the smooth, quick controls in Blacklist. But when Sam jumped up and grabbed a ledge that was about three times his height I laughed. Dude needs to apply for the NBA draft.
>>
>>389286961
Might try that, i'm playing through double agent right now on the OG xbox, never played since i never owned an OG one, did play the pc version and it was mediocre. I like the OG one alot better.
>>
>>389286756

It's really rewarding. You play the stealth way marking your targets, setting traps and suddently you unleash like 5 seconds of 100% calculated death upon your enemies and disapear again with the shadows.

And yeah, it totally feels like John Wick if you go for the Melee kill + multi headshots way,.

because it went from stealth gameplay to assassin gameplay. even games that reward "true stealth" has systems that reward systematically isolating and killing/knocking out every enemy you can a lot of the time. be it consumable items, ammo, XP or game-specific shit like soldiers to fulton in mgsv or something

just like with survival horror the game changes when being discovered means "shit, no GHOST +500 XP" instead of "shit, time to lube up because this is gonna be hard". let it die and let the suppressed handgun assassin simulators and stealth games come back as properly recognized different genres

>>
>>389290160
It's not really possible in CT. For example there's one moment in bathhouse. There's a door with a password terminal on it. If you open it and even close the door, the guard will see that it's unlocked. I tried going for a no OCP run because I thought that it's very unrealistic and I shot the light bulbs instead. Some levels for example the last one has cameras that have no blind spots and you have to use OCP. Your level of ghosting is pretty hardcore though. You can't even lure them with a whistle or throw an object to distract them.

Played almost every game except Splinter Cell series. Would you recommend it? I like non-lethal gameplay a lot, with no kills at all. SC has it?
Still, my favourite stealth is Shinobido on PS2. Its flawless stealth game, feels like the chess, where you move your figure and plan your movements. Second is MGS 3, for its gimmicks and features. Dishonored, Deus ex HR, Hitman BM, Thief 1 and MGS V awesome too.

What are some good and less mainstream stealth games? Also are Absolution and ThiAf really that garbage?

Tenchu status: Dead
Splinter Cell status: Dead
Thief status: That shit is definitely dead

Pure suffering to be a stealth fan in this day and age
>>
>>389302747
I was a newcomer to Thief with no sense of bias to the older titles and even I didn't fucking like the new installment. It was so restrictive and had no replay value. Wasn't even good as a stealth game by itself
>>
>>389302819
I heard Blacklist was alright though.
>>
>>389303008
Yeah, it's good. But it sold less than 2 million across all platforms, according to the "highly realiable" Vgchartz.

So do any of you ever kill nontargets in stealth games or are you full on pacifists/ghosts?

If any of you guys liked Styx (middle market euro jank) then look into Dark. Its not for everyone but 17 germans in a shed made it so go in with those expectations. Its like 2$ on a steam sale.

You can only ever get the best rewards if you go full pacifist/ghost.

The biggest reason why I hated Absolution was because as soon as you knock someone unconscious, you immediately get penalized for it.

Because they are too hard and niche.

Nu-kiddies don't like challenges or games that require brainpower or skill to beat.

Hitman is still alive.
Dishonored is still alive.
MGS is... almost alive?
Deus Ex is in hiatus but there's been recent games
FPSs like Wolfenstein TNO and II have stealth as an option
There's also newcomes to the genre like the Styx games, or indie games like Mark of the Ninja.

Stealth games are still there. It's just that Splinter Cell and MGS haven't been able to keep up like they did. Times change, and so do the pinnacles of the genre.

Because all stealth games now are "You can stealth or play guns blazing, your choice", so if you fail stealth the game just becomes quicker and easier.
>>
>Replace all standard guards with earnest runner gurus
>Have it so instead of them pacing everywhere, they're sprinting
>Make it so the clinking noise of armor attracts guards, but if you're wearing their armor they won't be suspicious
>Make it if you're within enemy sight while disguised, you will have to sprint with them or rouse suspicion the longer you take
>Have guards mock you for your slow running speed, with one incredibly loyal guard supportive instead
>Make it so the clinking of armor from running guards attracts more guards, so guards are constantly running everywhere trying to find the noise
>Make it so you can poison the guards and cause them to become disoriented, arousing suspicion that he may be a spy, thus being executed by trampling
>Make it so you can place caltrops and other traps to slow guards down, or even cause them to attack one another because they're walking
>Have various types of guards: The 100 yard sprinter -- a Guard in light armor which moves in short, incredibly fast bursts
>The Cross-Countryman -- a Guard that will never stop jogging and will be capable of outlasting / catching up to you if caught
>The Olympian -- A barbarian Guard trained from birth to become the mighty bulwark he is today -- The champion who will tail you mercilessly (only one or two in the game)
>The Cramp -- A slow guard that constantly disables himself but is also completely silent except for minor groaning every now and then
>The Flak -- A guard that kicks stones and dirt as he patrols, causing noises to become difficult to decipher and guards to regularly trample through in search of the disturbance
>The Ninja -- A rare Guard spawn on-level with the Olympian that keeps his arms placed behind him to obtain perfect balance and immeasurable speed. While strong, they will strike first before asking questions, allowing thieves to easily trick Ninjas into attacking their fellow guards
>Make it so all combat is done through spiked boots or shin swords

Deus Ex ruined stealth games I tell you.

Now there's always a way to fight it out.

Well, unless you can't kill the enemies, but people bitch about that too so, you can't win no matter which approach you take.

>but if you're wearing their armor they won't be suspicious
this made me think of a problem i've always had with stealth games. why the fuck would it be suspicious to hear footsteps coming from another room, when you're in a building with 50 other guys?
>>
>>389270454
it was just average mate. you probably just have higher expectations because you're an adult (i hope)
>>
>>389306074
Yeah the best way to avoid detection would be to walk at a normal pace without trying to be quiet, so there's no chance of you making odd sounds they wouldn't expect to hear. Unless they assume they're alone, or can see everyone that's supposed to be around, they shouldn't suspect anything.
>>
>>389272783
this. you can make a shitty rpg, shitty action game, shitty side scroller, shitty "retro" title and people will try it. you can't make shitty stealth. It's high risk, low reward.
>>
>>389306074
It depends on the setting. If you're in a highly-secretive facility, most likely guards are heavily tracked to prevent that very thing. Hearing footsteps outside of the assigned number of bodies is an easy way to identify when an intruder is around.

devs are greedy and anything that's not a guaranteed, lowest common denominator blockbuster hit with the broadest audience possible is ignored. funny how console life cycles are the same as they ever were, yet games typical dev cycle is not like 4-5 years. remember when square released 3 full FFs every generation? Because stealth game take skill most times and modern gamers as well as games journalists have no time to learn the mechanics of a game so anything challenging is bad. It's why walking simulators are so popular.

I agree the boiler room was pretty random esp. if you didn't save your sticky shockers and airfoil and it takes a few tries regardless since there's absolutely no way of knowing what are the best spots, pretty lame for a penultimate boss fight-type level. But for the lobby firefight it's better to just not use the duct and take the long way round, they relight the candles anyway so it's not possible not to get spotted there, no need for smoke nades.

>>389273361
>Thief 4
>Uniquely bad
This os why stealth games will never come back. The remaster was no better and no worse than thief 1 and 2 but since people don't have nostalgia goggles on when playing new stealth games they realize just how boring and shitty stealth is as a whole.
Face it, stealth is boring and deserves to be nothing more than an optional meme mechanic in better games. The only reason stealth ever existed was as a crutch for retards who are too stupid to process things that are happening quickly on screen and literally have to retard the pace of the game to a point their small minds can actually keep up with it

>Add to that the death of systemic gameplay and love of experimentation.
Spot on.

>Thi4f was an edge case in how bad it was
The problem with Thief 4 was that, in spite of having areas that were enormously large and complex and gorgeous to look at, those areas had so few avenues where the player could actually climb around on and explore/exploit for achieving a goal. Hitman (2016 edition) did well to create a large, complex world where the player was given enormous opportunity to explore and exploit and be creative in his attempt to achieve his goals. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has much of the same. Thief 5 (if there ever is one) can learn much from those two games. Prerequisite to employment on Thief 5 development should be several full playthroughs of Thief 1 and 2 to remind devs what fun is supposed to play like.
