It's got pretty good physics and it looks okay, while easily moddable and usable.

Whats this guy's story? Does it stand here all day, so bored that he forces random people to pick up the cans? And once they do, he rummages through garbage to fish it out and do it all over again?

The first time I played through HL2 after they added achievements, I threw the can at the Metrocop, and it bounced off his head into the trash can and it unlocked both achievements at the same time.

The cop laughed at me as if I put the can in the trash, but he still chased me around.

I hadn't bothered reading the episode 3 leak until now. I expected more.
I remember years back Valve said HL2:e3 was cancelled, they were just going to make HL3. But this is far too short to be HL3. It's clearly just an episode and it sets the stage for HL3, which leads me to believe it was a lie all along and they knew there was never going to be a sequel a long, long time ago.
It all ends here, save for the possibility of some half-finished conversion mod or SFM with hacky writing. Maybe the Black Mesa guys if we want a new dev group that makes Valve Time look like a fast food slogan.
It's a shame this series had to end like this. It never looked like Valve bit off more than they could chew. They could have done this. They even managed a way to wipe out or age most of the cast so they could drop and exchange voice actors, although I figured they would seeing as Breen fucking died in like 2010.

Where did it all go wrong?

>Why did Valve have to become so shit? It's so depressing.

One could argue that Gabe's outward sincerity back then was all a ruse and that Half-Life 2 was created for the sole purpose of getting as many people to sign up to Steam. Before TF2, HL2 and CSS were the bread and butter of Valve. They didn't start releasing third party games on Steam until late 2007 either. After the success of TF2 and Portal through indirect advertisement via fan youtube videos of gmod and tf2 bonk remixes, it basically caused a flood of people to install Steam and Valve started to realize that it was a much more profitable venture to focus on those games (Portal, TF2, L4D) then anything else.

Pretty much. They went where the money was. Gabe just realized he couldn't and doesn't need to please everyone. People were going to be left behind, IP's as well. Half Life was just the we'd want to keep going, for all it once was, what it meant for gaming, what it meant for us.
But we're not profitable. Not enough, anyways.

I think Half Life is a good game and its sequel a fine 6/10.

It's not about the game. It's about the community, all the mods, Machinema, vids and fun we had following the story. Half-Life was the lifeblood of PC gamers for over a decade and we want it back. Partially because it was a great time and we knew we could count on competent games, a fun storylife with a lore we could piece together and Volvo pushing the gaming tech further. We also want it back for nostalgia - it was our childhood and teens, right next to Quake and Unreal and Doom. And we want it back because it was about games, not profit margins and corrupt modern practices.

Half-Life isn't about a single masterpiece game. It's much, much bigger than that. And if you don't understand that, you're showing your underage. Respect your elders, cunt.

You need to let this sink in. We live in a world where Half Life, of the best selling and critically acclaimed series ever with no panned entries and no flops got a quiet conclusion via pastebin. And Valve is making a DOTA 2 card game in its place.

Admittedly I'm not that old, only in my early 20's. But fuck man, I honestly thought the whole "half life 3" thing was a meme because when I recently played half life 2, I felt like i was left out of the biggest joke in the history of gaming. My mind couldn't comprehend how people could like half life 2 enough to want another one, yet people did.

I even tried playing it through Synergy, with friends, and still couldn't have fun. And yeah, it's probably because I'm too late in playing it, but fuck, there are still games older that I can enjoy.

But it is good to know that people don't want Half life 3 because of them simply liking 1 and 2, but because of something more.

Steam IS Valve. Why would they split from the multi billion dollar revenue stream?
>>
>>389300330
They wouldn't be splitting the revenue stream, dumb dumb. They would be splitting the organizations. Valve would continuously make games and Steam would continuously... IDK, negotiate to get more titles and for cheaper?
>>
>>389300620

Valve is already opening another office up. They already have various divisions in their company. There is no point on expanding and creating another split entity because that wouldn't benefit Valve at all. Why make games if money comes to them already? They don't give a fuck about making Half Life. They want to create products the cheapest way possible without having to size up.

Because they have the system in place for developing games completely separate from Steam that they are losing sight of and not making proper use of. They need focus. That would benefit Valve.

I'm not going to argue against you guys about your opinion of HL2. You can like what you like. Heck I even admit that it took me 3 attempts at starting HL2 for me to enjoy it and complete it. I'm just tired of this meme of people thinking HL2 is bad because it's anything but.

I have found most of the people who don't like HL2 are the ones that didn't play it till much later after other shooters stared to do things that HL2 had innovated. It was a completely different game back then because other shooters hadn't done what it was doing yet. Things like the physics and the gravity gun, the first person cinematic experiences like shooting down the helicopter on the bridge, the way the story was not just told by spoon feeding you information but through the world itself, all of this played a role into why HL2 is just as great if not better than the first game.

IDK, enjoy what you like and play what you want, but HL2 was great.

I'm almost completely through with my playthrough of HL2, and I'd agree that the game falls between a 6 and 7 out of 10.

The game starts out super slow, but then you get to the airboat and I honestly really dig this segment. The airboat does drag on a bit and it repeats the whole missle dodging thing a few times, along with needing to dodge the chopper a few times, but the addition of the gun on the boat makes things better and mixes up the rest of the chapter.

Then Ravenholm is a nice, short segment that stresses the importance of the gravity gun and is followed by the highway, which has a lot of fun environments to get into firefights with. Also fighting the gunships is a ton of fun as they move around a lot and actually shoot your missiles out of the air. The game stays pretty solid up until Nova Prospekt, which starts out pretty nicely but drags on and repeats itself a lot. As soon as you get inside you spend a while knocking down turrets so your bugs can get deeper inside, then you spend 3 different segments setting up turrets so you can defend a position from the combine, with the last position being the teleporter out of there. It just feels lazy. You also fight two more antlion queens, but I actually like those parts.

The City fighting is were the game starts to pick back up, but slowly. Using the squad while moving through tight apartments is annoying, but retaking that old bank with Barny and fighting off all those striders is pretty damn fun. I really dug how the first set of striders forces you to constantly move to find more ammo.

I just got to the Citadel, but I remember it being pretty mediocre, but overall I'm kind of amazed that the game really isn't as good as I remember it being, not bad but still a fairly lacking experience when you consider the hype and praise the game gets. I mean I still like it, but it's definitly one of the weaker "classic" shooters out there.

"So many stars, so many planets," sighed Jerrodine, busy with her own thoughts. "I suppose families will be going out to new planets forever, the way we are now."

"Not forever," said Jerrodd, with a smile. "It will all stop someday, but not for billions of years. Many billions. Even the stars run down, you know. Entropy must increase."

"What's entropy, daddy?" shrilled Jerrodette II.

"Entropy, little sweet, is just a word which means the amount of running-down of the universe. Everything runs down, you know, like your little walkie-talkie robot, remember?"

"Can't you just put in a new power-unit, like with my robot?"

The stars are the power-units, dear. Once they're gone, there are no more power-units."

Jerrodette I at once set up a howl. "Don't let them, daddy. Don't let the stars run down."

"Now look what you've done, " whispered Jerrodine, exasperated.

"How was I to know it would frighten them?" Jerrodd whispered back.

"Ask the Microvac," wailed Jerrodette I. "Ask him how to turn the stars on again."

"Go ahead," said Jerrodine. "It will quiet them down." (Jerrodette II was beginning to cry, also.)

Jarrodd shrugged. "Now, now, honeys. I'll ask Microvac. Don't worry, he'll tell us."

He asked the Microvac, adding quickly, "Print the answer."

Jerrodd cupped the strip of thin cellufilm and said cheerfully, "See now, the Microvac says it will take care of everything when the time comes so don't worry."

Jerrodine said, "and now children, it's time for bed. We'll be in our new home soon."

Jerrodd read the words on the cellufilm again before destroying it: INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR A MEANINGFUL ANSWER.

HL2 is the Seinfeld of video games.
Its like watching Seinfeld, and going, "Wow that was really good." They you go watch How I Met Your Mother, and going "Haha, that was pretty good too". Then finally, you go back to Seinfeld and go "Meh".
What makes HL2 (and incidentally HL1) great is that it did what every other game is currently doing ,first and it did it back in 2004 (while half life did it back in 1998). Remember HL2:EP2 came out a month before CoD4:MW and is still regarded as the better game. Every game since it came out copied it so now when we go back from games like FEAR, CoD, Crysis, and so on, we find that HL2 was doing the same thing.
Its just like Seinfeld. Seinfeld did what every single sitcom is currently doing and it did it back in the late 80's and through out the 90's. Compared to modern Sitcoms its pretty meh. That is only because everybody copies the Seinfeld formula.

Why do you insist that popularity has nothing to do with it? And its not like HL2 is the most popular game either, it definitely hasn't hit the numbers CoD or Halo has, its just the general consensus of people who have played it have enjoyed it immensely. I mean ok? You wanted perfect AI in a 2004 game?

>The gunplay was mediocre, the AI wasn't very bright, the vehicle sections are too long for their own good
The gunplay was great for its time. No other game had done anything similar like the gravity gun and it was a very fun way to play the game. The AI was bright but it did have exploits. The vehicle sections are long but I'd argue that thats what gave HL2 its charm. You experience the full narrative of the game this way and theres many story elements you get to see by exploring the world that you wouldnt of otherwise known. Besides vehicles are fun .
>and the scripted sequences are tedious.
How dare a game have scripted sequences, it's almost as if they want to tell you a story and let you experience "awe moments"

Ross is part of the "old" YouTube style of thinking, where people were after exposure and not just money. 2007-2010 were great, aside from ray Williams starting the cancer

> I'm just tired of this meme of people thinking HL2 is bad because it's anything but.

What? It's the opposite dude. That's why I was so fucking confused when playing half life 2 for the first time because all I've ever heard was that it was an amazing game and that everyone who mentions it loves it. I've never once heard anything bad from it. The meme is that it's GOOD, not the other way around.

Is there a half life fan artwork site where I can find all the new art with Gordon and dyson shperes n stuff?

honestly the difficulty of showing scale like that is probably why the ending to episode 3 would have been slightly different than what was written. it's easy enough to say "you see a dyson sphere", it's a lot harder to effectively show it.

The Citadel looking big in HL2 was just skybox fuckery. The actual model was really small.

I don't think it would be that hard. I would just draw a skybox and then slowly zoom in on it while seamlessly swapping out the skybox so I could continue zooming. That way you could start really "far off" and end up "really close" while keeping the same level of detail.

Pic related is the skybox to a level in Homeworld 2. Its part of a Dyson Sphere.

You could easily include Dog in the plot, just have him tag along when they travel to Antarctica. Hell, they could even have him have a sad death moment when he sacrifices himself holding off the Combine so Gordon and Alyx can continue the mission or something.
>>
>>389318137
An early draft of Episode 3 involved the player finding what was basically an assembly line for citadels. In a way that'd probably be a more effective way of showing the scale of the Combine, if you consider how huge the citadel was and how much effort it took to destroy, then realize the combine are producing those things like they're a cheap sweatshop gppds.

I think it was also because half-life 1 and 2 were messes of development schedules that went vastly over what they originally planned.

Remember how they bought up the company that was working on that new liquid method? Used them on portal 2 for a gimmick then dropped them. Gabe came from Microsoft, he knows that you don't make products, you make platforms. SFM is proof of this

The combine, at this point, are cogs in a vast machine with only a small, minuscule portion capable of free will. The G-man is some powerful entity, yet despite its tie to the combine, its relying on some random human?

I liked the idea of a G-man being a mysterious third party who was the wrench in the works for everyone. Sort of like Nyralhotep's interaction with just about everyone and anyone

You think the US, Western Europe, or even East Asia has nicer Citadels?
Because I was always wondering whether the Combine truly fucked up that much shit, or if you were just in an average Commieblock.
>>
>>389321791
Doubt it. Breen wouldn't stay in the shittiest citadel. Almost nothing he does needs him to be in City 17, so if there was a nicer citadel out there, he could work remotely from it.
>>
>>389321791
Probably not. City 17 was one of the better Citadels.
>"Welcome. Welcome to City 17. You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest remaining urban centers. I thought so much of City 17 that I elected to establish my administration here, in the Citadel so thoughtfully provided by our benefactors. I've been proud to call City 17 my home. And so, whether you are here to stay, or passing through on your way to parts unknown - welcome to City 17. It's safer here."
