My hope is that on Furi 2 if they ever make it you still play as the first game's Rider having the "Protect" ending be the canon one

Instead of fighting guardians you fight other Riders that actually accomplished their missions and are just as changed as the MC was

It's about The Voice, his plan all along was was to build the prison not with the goal of holding The Rider, but making him value humanity as he broke out. So, when he decides that it's time to break him out, despite the risks, despite the deaths, he does so. In the process, The Rider becomes convinced to save the planet from assimilation, thus fulfilling The Voice's ultimate plan and allowing him to live happily ever after with his daughter. In terms of the games universe, there was never a chance the jailers could have stopped The Rider, it took everything humanity had just to capture him. The Rider will always escape the prison, but only if The Voice was successful will he stop the assimilation. Thus, you decide only if he was successful or not, meaning the entire story is really about The Voice and you're simply used by it, just as The Voice uses you to escape his own creation.
