How come video games never embraced rock and roll?

You'd think somebody, somewhere, would have made a rock odyssey in the form of a video game. Is it video games irreverent tone that makes it impossible to take anything seriously?

I would have, just once, like to have seen my favorite medium for entertainment embraced the Doors, or Led Zeppelin, some kind of montage of kaleidoscopic visual effects, interactive media and rock and roll...

I guess I'm just a freak, a headbanger who was caught in rocks death throes when electronic media was in ascendancy..

>ib4 rock is dead. Yeah, I know, all the more reason to do it now..
>>
because rock music is stagnate and all sound the same, grampa

Brutal Legend.

There you go.

Fuck off.
>>
The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success.
>>

There were some pretty kaleidoscopic, psychedelic games in the Megadrive/SNES era, but it was more of a "weird 90s" way as opposed to 60's/70's.

To answer your question though it's because by the time the technological capability was there, that kind of music was at least 30 years out of date. Nobody's going to make games that appeal to the Woodstock generation.

Guilty Geard, while not about rock, has a rock filled OST and it has influenced the characters to an extent (ex. sol badguy). check out the guilty gear xrd OST OP.

Programmers seem to have no problem incorporating classical, jazz, pop, and every other damn thing, but for some reason, blues and rock always came across as disingenuous in this medium.

Rock Star, DDR, all those music games, they seem to castrate the sound, make it feel hollow and commercial..

I've seen programmers devote their entire lives to esoteric projects, they suffer for their art.. are programmers just not capable of the emotional depth required to feel the music?

Maybe its the casual racism inherit in the programming industry, since most programmers are wither white or asian, that makes them unable to appreciate blues, rock and motown..

But you know, most rock stars were heterosexual white males, so I don't see why that would be a problem.

Maybe its the cold, shallow, corporate environment that programmers are forced to work in? The PC PC culture that prevents emotional honesty and raw, intense emotion..
>>
>>389258703
Again, completely irreverent in its tone and theme. Art sometimes requires you to take yourself seriously.
>>
>>389259240
Dadrock isn't good art though. Making an 'art game' with the music you want would be like topping a steak with Kraft singles.
>>
>>389258452
only fascist listen rock and roll
>>
>>389258452
Movies, Television, most other mediums had no problem incorporating rock and roll into what they were doing.

Maybe its the inherit rational basis that dismisses all sense of mysticism that makes it impossible to make a rock n roll video game. If you don't get a chill down your spine when you listen to black magic woman, how can you share the experience with others?
>>
>>389259418
vidya artists aren't exactly known for their taste in art, music and fashion. In fact, you might say they are kind of oblivious.
>>
Idk about classic rock, but heavy metal is definitely heavy into vidya
>>
>>389259531
then it should suit you just fine then, what with your constant censorship of any narrative that doesn't suit you..
>>
>>389259020
That's because those styles of music are very hard to contexualise in a video game without turning it into a period piece.

Also they're fucking expensive to license which is probably a big part of the issue as well.
>>
>>389259805
you mean fagrock?
yeah, i know.
japanese love fagrock cause it reminds them of classical.
>>
>>389259858
that never stopped our parents generation. If they couldn't get their hands on a record, they would make bootlegs they copied off the radio. Its kind of disingenuous to claim that vidya artists are the heralds of the open-source movement when they don't even have the balls to rip a song off a 40 year old album.
>>
>>389260050
bootleg version of song =/ putting a song in your game that could get you a multimillion dollar lawsuit.
Unless you mean just making a song that sounds extremely similar, in which case you have a point, but it has been done (Doom)
>>
>>389259898
When Japanese think of Heavy Metal, they think of bands like Rush, not OG Black Sabbath or Metallica. I guess it just fucks with there cerebral processes or something, programmers just live in their heads and there is no way to pry em out of their skulls short of dynamite.

>>389260050
You sound like you just got into classic rock as your first music genre and you want to sound like you know a lot more about music than you actually do. You should probably lurk more before posting a thread and filling it with pseudo-intellectual nonsense
>>
>>389260258
Commercialism is whats killing the video games industry. Nothing they do comes across as authentic or genuine anymore.
>>
>>389258452
There is plenty of rock in vidya, it's just prog rock because it's used for BGM.
>>
>>389259020
This reads like a Reddit comment, but I'll bite. The biggest reason is that rock music is harder to produce. Many other genres you can create with DAWs, but in order to create those genres you are describing, you pretty much need a band of well-versed musicians.
>>
>>389258452
cost is one factor. classical is free or cheap, hiring some indie dev to do shit is cheap. licensing stones or pink floyd or queen or god forbid the beatles is fucking expensive as all hell.

that said i think cod used some rock music at some point
>>
>>389260375
This is kind of the pot calling the kettle black. Most vidya programmers listen exclusively to classical and (maybe) jazz, and won't give anything else a try.

I guess programmers really aren't capable of the emotional honesty and self-introspection necessary to really enjoy music.
>>
>>389259020
you keep talking about programmers as if they're the ones who design games
>>
>>389260050
Yeah but the rights holders to those songs aren't going to send an armada of lawyers after you for making a radio bootleg. Selling a commercial product would get you hung out to dry.

Also, most people don't give a fuck about old school motown or 60's rock, and it's going to sound incongruous without having a reason for being there.
>>
> tfw no death grips videogame
>>
>>389260387
Video games have always been commercial, don't fucking kid yourself
>>
>>389260606
>Most vidya programmers listen exclusively to classical and (maybe) jazz
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHA
Do you have even ONE fact to back that up?
>>
I think most rock n roll copyright is there to keep people who don't have the balls to bootleg live recordings. You can't keep bands from playing cover songs during live performances. If you are too scared to play copyrighted music in your games, or are overly concerned with making a profit, then you are probably a corporate shill anyway, and you wouldn't get it.

I mean, you can't get blood from a stone. They can sue you all they want, but even Time Warner couldn't shut down a popular passion project.

Its too bad there isn't some way to program on the fly, so that games were considered live performances.
>>
>>389260606
I'm not talking about game programmers, I'm talking about the fact that you clearly don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
-You don't seem to understand how game development works
-you don't seem to understand the state of the music industry or the breadth and variety of music that exists
-you don't seem to understand that companies are made up of individuals and are not monolithic entities
-you don't seem to understand that the people in this thread are not game devs
-you don't seem to understand that music didn't stop 50 years ago
-you don't seem to understand the phrases and expressions you use
you should stop posting
>>
You know the closest I ever got to a rock and roll video game?

Manhunt.

That shit was raw, intense.. it felt real.
>>
>>389261249
Well, you all seem like very rude, unintelligent and inarticulate people. I can see I am wasting my time here. It was a nice thought, but I guess vidya and rock and roll will be like two roommates who hate each other.
>>
just like your brain and logic
>>
>>389261104
>If you are too scared to play copyrighted music in your games, or are overly concerned with making a profit, then you are probably a corporate shill anyway, and you wouldn't get it.

Matey you're starting to sound like a bad parody of a 60's era hippie. It's not about "getting it", the courts can and absolutely will stop you selling a product that contains other people's intellectual property. That's the entire point of copyright, not to "scare the squares who aren't rebellious enough to make a bootleg".
